meeting my father when he returned from the army

Trying to put up 2 deckchairs for my sister and I in my grandma's backyard. I was about 7 or 8 and no matter how many times we were shown we still got it wrong, ending up in fits of laughter. Even today when I see deckchairs I always smile at the memory.

when I was tired and my dad would lift me onto his shoulders. I felt so tall and on top of the world

When I think of my childhood, one of my favourite memories is of going to my grandparents' house on Sundays after Church. We were a big extended family, so there were lots of cousins to play with. We were given lemonade and 'suggestive biscuits' wink, which I never had at home. If it was fair, we played outdoors, usually skipping and ball games. If wet, we stayed indoors and played card games like Lexicon, to which I owe my spelling prowess to this day grin. Happy days!

Falling in the sea in Malta where I was stationed with my Mum and Dad ! I remember having to be pushed home in the pram wrapped in the babies shawl whilst my Dad carried my little sister.

I didn't mind as I had wanted to swim so badly - I might have accidently /on purpose fallen in :-)

Throwing a snow ball some distance that somehow fell directly onto the head of a schoolfriend. I immediately went into my home and my friend never did find out what happened.

When we were kids we spent all of our 6 week holidays at my nans in Middlesex, we used to go out with the kids from next door to my nan, as they were the same age as us, we had what they called a Red Bus Rover Ticket, similar to our all day bus tickets now. Also we used to be woken up with a cup of tea, china cup and saucer and rich tea biscuits, aah good memories, also we used to use my nans shoes and waddle up the garden ha ha, even though they were too big for us

Visiting my gran and having her lovely fruit buns, which tasted better the old they got. And her garden too - pansies, daisies and loganberries!

When I was very young, my granddad, who had one of his fingers shot off in the first world war, always used to tell me that I'd bitten it off when I was a baby. I always believed him!!

Playing in my Grandma's garden with my brother and best friends Jojo and catherine. It was a beautiful long garden with old trees dotted along its length. We used to build tents from old blankets, rope, pegs using trees and the washing line. Grandma would bring us home made Shepherd's pie, home grown runner beans and large cut glass tumbler of lemonade. She had to ring our bell and give the pass word. We spent all day in our dens playing cards, colouring and arguing!

Going out with my Dad to see my Grandma on Sundays on the bus when I was 3 or 4 as we didn't have a car until I was 5.

My grandad always used to come around to our house every Sunday morning when I was 2 or 3. He always bought me a tube of Terrys blackcurrant pastilles which I loved. Happy days!

My mum would read stories to me at night and often just stop as she continued to read them to herself, but my dad would recite poems and for some this my sound boring but he always brought them to life and 60 odd years later i still know and love them.

Once a year during the summer school holidays Mum and Dad would take my brother, my sister and I on the bus down to Torquay sea front. We would walk the length of the front getting an ice cream in the way. Talking, running, laughing and generally enjoying being together. On the way back along the promenade we would get fish and chips to eat on the bus home. Mum and Dad worked hard and it was rare we could all be together. For years that evening was our summer holiday. Bliss!

Nobody believes me but I honestly remember being in my pram when I was very little. You're not meant to have any memories before about the age of 4 but this is a genuine memory.

Grandange Fri 07-Sept-18 08:52:55

I remember a family wedding when I was about 3 and my brother about 1 year old. I had my hair done in ringlets ( and rags the night before!) I had a secondhand dress that I hated because it was prickly ( would love it now tho) and a cardigan an aunt had knitted which I also hated. The reception was in a church hall and the family had to supply cutlery etc. so our cutlery for years after had red thread tied round the handles. All the adults were dancing the hokey-
cokey and my little brother crawled along the tables and drained all the sherry glasses. He slept well for quite a while!

Going round to my grandpa's house and gazing at his wonderful display of geraniums in his conservatory. Even today, when I catch the scent of geraniums, it takes me back to that time.

When we moved to the country from the city and we had a huge garden. I ran round and round it relishing the space - and then Dad bought our first puppy: a collie x labrador that I was allowed to name. As I was a fan of the Dandy, I called him Bob after Andrew Glen's border collie.

Going out and about on the streets with friends and roaming for miles with no restrictions. Also going to youth club once a week and being given a lift back in the back of a landrover.

MrRichTea Fri 07-Sept-18 01:04:56

Being on my dads shoulders - feelinglike i was on top of the world, smiling & laughing, about 4/5!
