Knowing that money was tight, we never expected much for Christmas. I will never forget receiving a simple wooden wardrobe that my Dad had made and painted and some clothes inside for my dollies. The clothes were made to measure by my Mum and Grandma and included a couple of dresses, tops and skirts and knitted cardigans. The simple joy makes me smile even now.
Sitting in a private side carriage on an old fashioned train (you know, the kind with the long corridor running along outside the private carriages?) with my gran, a picnic and a bucket and spade, on our way to the seaside. I can still feel the excitement, joy and anticipation of the wonderful day ahead and I can still see her lovely smiling face as we sat close as two peas in a pod as she stroked my hair and gazed out of the window...
Baking butterfly cakes with my Mum, she had to work a lot and even though she must have been exhausted she would always bake with me on her days off. Butterfly cakes are still my favourite
My favs childhood memory was growing up next to the sunny seaside of Tenerife and moving round different locations with the army and spending special daily memories with my mum ❤️
My sister was in hospital a lot as a child so I was mostly looked after by my gran because obviously Mum & Dad had to be with my sister. One of my favourite memories is that gran would take me to the local pub on the banks of the canal and she would sit and drink a guinness while I sat on the edge of the canal with my glass of pop and watched the canal boats drifting by
My favourite memory is riding in the seat on my dad's bike. The seat was attached to the cross bar. It was metal and had places for my feet. Sitting in it I was held safely between my dad's arms. When my mum was in hospital for a long time he took me to nursery every morning and collected me every night. When I was older I would pester my mum to let me go to the end of the street to meet my dad from work. He would stop, let me climb into the seat and then we would ride down the street together.
Going on holiday in a caravan with my parents and grandparents. We enjoyed such happy times making sandpies and burying my dad's legs in the sand. Such carefree days.
We used to eat tinned spaghetti and called it worms. While gardening me and my younger sister found some worms and put them on a spade. As my Mum came out to see what we were doing my sister was just about to eat the worms thinking they were the same worms we ate as spaghetti.
Sitting on the sofa in the living room with my Mum and Dad and two sisters watching Take Your Pick with Michael Miles with the fire blazing in the hearth and watching the patterns on the ceiling that the flames made through the old fire guard
Too many to choose from, but fondly remember the 1960s at primary school, "Listen with Mother" on the big radio each afternoon, quiet time with our arms crossed and our heads down on the desks as we were told to do. Also discovering the sheer joy of books, including my favourite Enid Blyton "Faraway Tree" series.
My favourite childhood memories revolve around Christmas and going to my grandparents. It was my Nan's birthday on Christmas Eve so our very large family gathered there on the evening. Seeing all my cousins, mom's cousins, aunts, uncles etc and playing with everyone was always so exciting.
My aunt and uncle came to visit on Sunday afternoons and we would play board games. as an only child it was the only time when I felt part of a 'family'.
My favourite childhood memory would be following my Dad around the garden, being given raspberries, rhubarb, blackberries, strawberries, apples, and pears, and tomatoes in his greenhouse to taste, the smell of tomatoes growing always takes me straight back there with my Dad ..... such sweet memories
