Watching my gran build a coal fire up in the grate and then holding crumpets on long toasting forks by the flames;eating the crumpets with lots of butter. It is such a comforting memory and I always think of gran when I eat crumpets now, although she always called them pikelets.

Sunday afternoon walks with my uncle - into the countryside where I learnt about birdsong and watched the cows being milked; and down to the harbour to see cargoes being unloaded. An ice cream on the way home.

Going to the annual town fair. It was a huge occasion and everyone went. We were each given a small amount of money to spend and there were wildly exotic treats such as toffee apples, nougat, candyfloss and peanut brittle as well as all the rides. It was the highlight of the year, far better than Christmas!

Spending time playing with my friends whilst my mum was farm working. Best days of my life. Doesn't happen now a days as farm workers aren't allowed to take their kids to work.

Laughing with my younger brother and Grandad at the old silent movies. My Granddad having seen them when he was a young boy when they first came out.

Making jam tarts in Nanna's kitchen from her pastry scraps whilst she baked pies and cakes. No matter how I try my pastry is never as nice as hers!

My mum taking my sister and I on the train every Saturday to Kidderminster to visit my lovely funny kind great granddad Ted. And to see the steam train that passed by the back of his house. Very happy memories ? miss them both so much.

Sitting with my granny on her veranda, stringing green beans whilst looking out over the garden. It was a case of string 5 beans, eat 1 bean, string 5 beans, eat 1!!

Spending summers at the seaside town my Granny and Grandpa retired to. I grew up in the east end of Glasgow and to have the freedom of a small town, the sea and no Mum and Dad rules made for very happy summers!

Miriam Mon 10-Sept-18 17:08:03

Outings with dad on Sunday afternoons so mum could have a rest. In the winter we went to museums in London followed by hot chocolate and cake, in those days you could park in London outside the museums. In the summer we would drive out into the country for a walk followed by tea and cake.

Walking down to the local cinema with friends on a Saturday morning to watch the matinees. We were given enough money for the entrance fee & a packet of crisps & sweets. It was great!

Waiting on our front garden wall with my sister for Dad to get home from work on his bike.

On a very hot day in 1950something, having a water pistol fight with my parents and my maternal grandparents who lived in the adjoining terrace house (our kitchen windows looked into theirs). The water pistols were bicycle pumps, a watering can and empty Jif lemon bottles - except for Grandad who had my seaside bucket! I would have been six or seven.

I remember as a small child going to my Grandmothers and always hunting in a big sideboard to find the sweets that were always hidden in there.

My favourite memory is of us going on holiday, my Dad driving our grey Morris 1000, my Mum in the front seat and me lying on the back seat with the picnic rug. We would stop off in Cardiff for a cooked breakfast, in a little cafe where my Dad knew the owner. The excitement building as we got to the old Seven Bridge and I knew then we were on our way down to Devon. After we crossed the Seven bridge, we used to stop off a few times for tea and Welsh cakes. My Dad would light the primus stove the kettle would go on and he and my Mum would have a cup of tea in yellow plastic cups, there were some sort of red tables the would attatch to the car doors, the tea would go on there and Mum would get out the tin of Welsh cakes which she would have made on the Friday and I would have orange squash also in the yellow cups. The M5 wasn't built then and there was always bottle necks of traffic on the way down, it would take us all day to get there, but it was part of the enjoyment of the holidays. Writing these memories down has brought back the sights and smells of these happy times.

my favourite childhood memory was walking over the fields to the nearest pub, it was happy because we were doing it as a family, but only because my dad was injured at work and had his burnt hands bandaged, however, he may have been in pain, but the days he spent with us are some of the happiest I remember.. as he had lots of time for us, as was off work sick .

pyramidblaster Mon 10-Sept-18 23:35:57

My dad allowing me to work with him when he was a taxi driver. I would hide in the area next to him.
