The BFG: don't really know why, but I suppose reminds me of elderly male relatives now long gone but still fondly remembered.

Matilda because of the way she could go off into imaginary worlds and escape reality. She could outsmart and stand up against those who were unjust - a sort of super hero quality.

My favourite Roald Dahl character is actually a group of characters known as The Gremlins. They appeared in Roald Dahl’s first book published in 1943. I read about it a long time ago but could never find a copy. I spent years scouring book markets, flea markets, jumble sales and car boots but was never able to track it down. With the advent of the internet, I started searching online, and there were a few 1st edition copies to be had but at ridiculous prices. As much as I wanted to read about these little creatures, I could not justify that kind of expense so put it out of mind.

On a recent visit to family in Australia, I walked into a second-hand bookshop in Adelaide, and there it was. A 1943 1st edition in reasonable condition at a price I could afford. I can’t tell you how excited I was when I handed over my money and skipped out of the shop! Since then I’ve read it many, many times.

For anyone who might not know, the gremlins are little creatures responsible for mechanical failures on aeroplanes. Roald Dahl tells the story of Gus a World War II RAF pilot who while patrolling in his Hurricane at 18,000 feet, sees a little man no more than six inches tall drilling a hole in his plane’s wing! It’s a great book, and I urge you to read it if you haven’t already. Republished in 2006 it's much easier to find now.

Got to be the BFG. Not a perfect character but his heart's in the right place, and despite being muddle-headed uses his strengths to the good .

Mopsx4 Sun 16-Sept-18 17:02:45

Bfg. These are just what my grandson needs to encourage him with his reading.

How can one choose one out of so many different marvellous characters

patsykelly Sun 16-Sept-18 16:55:45

Definitely the Twits because they are hilarious - mouldering cornflakes and sardine tails in Mr Twit's beard is an image forever conjured up at a moment's notice!!!

Samiejb Sun 16-Sept-18 16:53:55

Oompa Loompa - because they could bring me home some chocolate every day

alabaster Sun 16-Sept-18 16:51:51

Willy Wonka - great personality!

pixie601 Sun 16-Sept-18 16:46:22

Charlie from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as I was so pleased when he won a Golden Ticket which he deserved!

inishowen Sun 16-Sept-18 16:35:44

Willy Wonka because of his associations with chocolate!

MichStew Sun 16-Sept-18 16:23:49

The BFG, as he sets a good example to children.

Grandmarnia Sun 16-Sept-18 16:21:06

Charlie from Charlie and the Chocolate factory. A lovely boy who just wanted to help his family.

spevick Sun 16-Sept-18 16:11:38

BFG.. such a lovely grand dad..everyone would love one!

Holidayenthusiast Sun 16-Sept-18 16:09:37

I love Mr (and Mrs) Twit. When I was a primary school teacher I used to read this book at storytime. I always enjoyed the children's reaction to the gruesome descriptions of these characters.
This was a great gateway book into reading for reluctant readers!

Matilda for her love of reading

Dannydog1 Sun 16-Sept-18 15:39:35

Mr Twit from The Twits, can’t forget enjoying his wonderful beard with my children.

The BFG for me. Both of my grandads died before I was born, my paternal grandfather James died for his country in the First World War and although I never knew him I’ve always felt close to him thanks to my grandmother who talked about him to me from when I was old enough to understand how kind and brave he was. The BFG is just the kind of Grandad I would have wanted and I’m sure Grandad James would have been just like him! Love reading it to my grandchildren even though it brings tears to my eyes.

Charlie And The Chocolate Factory I was given a copy as a young girl by a visiting relative, living in York close to Terry's and Rowntree's chocolate Factories .we often had the lovely smell of chocolate in the air .I must confess having relatives working in both factories we had an endless supply of chocolates.

Love Roald Dahl books- there’s enduring appeal that’s been enjoyed by our children and since then our older grandchildren. Looking forward now to the younger grandchildren getting to know them! Favourite character is the wonderful Matilda just a delight to see her triumph over adversity- just like we all wish we could!

nanarossi Sun 16-Sept-18 15:12:24

The BFG. Our children sat enthralled when my husband read it to them and Grandad now reads to the grandchildren. Magical moments.

moleswife Sun 16-Sept-18 15:08:33

I have to agree with Chewbacca - it has to be Mr. Twit - but ably assisted in his scheming ways by his Mrs! My DS loved this book so much and I intend to buy it (and all the other RD stories) for his beauiful baby girl just as soon as she's old enough to enjoy them - is 10 months too soon? smile

cathyd Sun 16-Sept-18 15:07:04

The Oompa - Loompas from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory are my favourites, they are hard working and great at singing the rhymes about naughty children

Hameringham Sun 16-Sept-18 14:52:11

Willy Wonka
