My often now foggy memory clearly remembers a time when I played in the spinney next door with my friend whose home also backed onto the small wooded area. We played a fantasy game of everyday life using only materials found in the woods, twigs for construction, stones for mosaic designs and signs, mud for making vessels, grasses for plaiting, flowers for perfume and decoration. Also it was a hideaway from our brothers, a sanctuary and although it was our through route to each other’s houses our parents never came that way. We were truly lucky children to have our own fantasy world. It was a sad time when the plot came up for sale and became someone’s back garden.

Making “soup.” We used to collect flower heads, grass, twigs, stones, snail shells, put them in an old saucepan, add water, seeds, soil and anything else we found, and stir it and put the saucepan on a “gas ring” made from stones. Then we would feed this mixture to our dolls and soft toys. I remember putting the saucepan in the shed, then forgetting about it, and my father discovering the slimy, decaying mess days later. Curiously, my own children made garden soup too. I used to find it brewing nicely in their wardrobe.

I used to do French Knitting. Yards and yards of it which I made into scarves, slippers and all manner of useless items but it just fascinated me.

It has to be Hide and seek for me. Our house backed on to a large park, we would go through the fence and meet up with all the other children that lived around the park. Some days there would be as many as 12-15 kids and of all ages. We always knew when it was time to go home, you would hear your Mum calling your name over the fence and she always knew we were safe in the park. Great times.

Does sitting under a tree with a book count as outdoor activity?

Making dens around large trees in a nearby field. Our 'houses' or dens were made around the bottoms of the trunks where we swept clean and created little 'rooms' marked out with sticks and stones.

I loved to read so a visit to the library was a real treat for me.

Susanmcg Thu 18-Apr-19 15:18:45

Just realised it is outdoor activity. In which case, it was getting my mum's wooden clothes airer and old blankets and making a tent outdoors.
