I loved to be outside, building dens in the garden was probably what I loved best.
Until I got to the seaside- in which case I was always in the water!

My sister and I would pretend we were horses and make a complete jumping course in the back garden.

Riding a stick with sock for a head, as a hobby horse, over jumps and chasing the poor chickens around my granny's huge hen run. Finding a secret cache of eggs which the chickens had laid in the long grass. Climbing onto the hen house roof with a friend and eating scrumped apples. Scrumping apples!

Treasure hunting with my cousin on the beach near his house. Shells, sea glass, coloured rope etc. We must have been out for hours some days. Happy memories.

Exploring and building dens. Bit of a tomboy!

French skipping, tree climbing, miniature garden making in an old saucer, making rose petal perfume, pretending that we were horses and making a circuit of jumps in the garden, exploring the local woods, climbing the local chalk pit... what a shame so many children do not appear to have the freedom that we had.

Without a doubt it was climbing trees. Getting down was a lot more problematic...

Crouching by the old Anderson shelter at the bottom of the garden with the boy next door; we cooked potatoes in an old bottomless enamel breadbin and listened endlessly to the only record we had for a wind- up gramophone: The Blue Danube.

I spent hours hitting a ball against the wall of an adjoining house. It was only years later at a funeral that I was told it drove the inhabitants of the house batty - they heard every single ball! So wish someone had mentioned it at the time!
