Being a fruit tester on the farm my grandad managed. He would point at a tree or plant and I would test the fruit. I really believed I was actually testing every one I ate.
My sister and I used to love rock-pooling and beach-combing on holiday. Or if we were going for a woodland trek we'd collect acorns, conkers, pine cones.
I was a tomboy as a child. My favourite outdoor time was spent making a 'steering cart' with my 'boy' friends and racing it down a very steep hill! It was made of old pram wheels and a bit of wood for the seat/steering column. A piece of strong string/rope, skipping rope was good, was used as the steering control. We had no brakes, only our feet. It was wonderful! The freedom was great.
My sisters and i would make homes for the fairys that lived in the woods was like a full town we would go back everyday to check what they had be up too great memories.
PUTTING STRING AROUND A BOTTLE THEN BREAD INSIDE AND PUT IT IN A STREAM TO CATCH MINNOWS, IF YOU PULLED IT OUT QUICK THEY HAD NO TIME TO GET OUT OF THE BOTTLE NECK. MANY HOURS WERE HAPPILY SPENT DOING THIS. ALSO DAMMING A STREAM AND MAKING DENS, PRESSING WILD FLOWERS AND MY I-SPY BIRD BOOK.
Running around a big green park with my friends and family, then enjoying a delicious pic-nic on the grass whilst listing to the birds singing and the sound of laughter in the air.
I have many golden memories of my childhood. In those days money was tight so I had to amuse myself and be creative.
Playing outdoors was a massive adventure. I used to love going on picnics and took as many teddies as I could carry for a Teddy Bears Picnic. I dressed the teddies up with daisy chains that I made. I picked bundles of wild flowers which I took home and pressed and glued them on to cards which I presented proudly to my family.
I spent special times drawing pictures of flowers and looking for four leaf clovers hoping that my luck would change so I could live the life of a Princess then I could buy my parents diamonds and jewels.
With excitement I packed up a simple picnic of jam butties and a bottle of water, a rug and as many teddies as I could carry. I never ventured far from home but my imagination took me to Teddy Bear land and the Teddies were my furry family.
If I am lucky enough to win a Joules picnic basket I could relive my childhood all over again and take my 4 year old grandaughter on Teddy Bears picnics and make some more golden memories to last a lifetime.
Playing at shops and making mud pies. In the back court or someone else's back court ( communal space ) . We used stones for shopping and wrapped them in newspaper. Mum would give us a milk bottle (glass) filled with water and a sandwich and we'd stay out all day. Those were the days. No health and safety!
I used to have a wigwam in the garden and would spend ages in there with my friends pretending to be a native Americans. I had a headdress with feathers in it too.
My Dad was an expert tree house builder! Starting with easy safe ones when we were very little and progressing to a superb one with a roof when we were older! I loved playing in my den!
I used to love making perfume in the old watering can - pulling the petals off mum's roses and peonies, adding in water and lavender and anything else that smelt suitably nice. Then once it had fermented over a few days, I'd go around the garden sprinkling it everywhere.
