Making a den in the field opposite our street, riding Mum's bike around the village and exploring the local woods and fields. Children don't have that freedom these days.

Making mud pies and laying them out to dry if we had visitors.

Making mud pies with cutlery I'd smuggled out of the kitchen to use as tools.
Building dens and creating the 'spy eye' club with my friends.
Constructing ( on reflection lethal) ramps to ride over on our bikes, usually with an old plank and bricks.
Being outside all day until dark.

I used to love having picnics with a friend in those halcyon days when it was safe for children to be out by themselves and the sun was always shining. My mother would give us hard boiled eggs and jam sandwiches, and we thought we had a banquet.

Was very into Newts and Rabbits! Used to collect the newts from a nearby park and made them great little homes in biscuit tins! Poor things. Loved rabbits too and we had some at the bottom of the garden. Could never understand why they regularly disappeared until I was much older and my grandmother let slip we were having rabbit for Sunday Lunch! Could never look the rabbits in the eyes again!

We lived near the beach and enjoyed the seemingly endless summer days we spent there but my favourite days were the wet and windy ones when we still went to the beach. We would dig a big hole, surround it by deckchairs turned on their sides, 2 across the top for a roof and we would sit huddled up inside our make shift den watching the wild and windy sea while we at our jam sandwiches and took turns sipping from a large bottle of orange squash!

simple pleasures :-).
