My dad would build me and my sister a little house made of straw bales every year and we used to love playing ‘house’, the house would gradually diminish as the year went on and dad needed the straw!

Tree climbing

We used to spend hours in the grounds of an old deserted house. Climbing trees, having picnics, building dens. As long as we got home before the street lights came on we were ok.

It's so hard to narrow it down to one, but if I must, I would say rollerskating. I lived in a hilly area, so it could be a challenging activity.
I've never forgotten the time when I decided to take a neighbours dog for a walk while wearing rollerskates (me, that is, not the dog! ?)
I made it down what was known as 'the steep hill by going at an angle and using the kerb to stop me every few yards. Then as I went up a rough path towards the park, Sandy the dog spotted a rabbit up ahead and set chase. I hung on to the lead and had the fastest, most exhilarating dog-powered ride of my life ?

Used to play "Itchy-Bay" in the backyard with an empty Germolene tin or shoe polish tin - a N.E. version of Hopscotch.

Whizzing around on my roller skates. My knees still bear the scars grin

LullyDully Fri 05-Apr-19 17:33:20

Digging in the sand with my brother and making channels for the water.

Fifirouge54 Fri 05-Apr-19 17:32:21

Setting up a flower shop in the garden - we used to pick mum’s or grandma’s flowers and ‘sell’ them. We would also cycle into the countryside and disappear for a whole day fishing.

ldoone64 Fri 05-Apr-19 17:31:45

climbing walls and playing 'chases'.

iwanawinsumat Fri 05-Apr-19 17:31:44

Playing 'kick can' in the street, where you kicked a used can off the kerb as far as you could & another person had to retrieve it whilst the others hid (basically 'hide & seek'). There were no cars on our street then so we could play & be perfectly safe.

Den making, preferably up a tree or in a barn. Luckily I had a friend who was equally keen ?

My favourite outdoor activity was skipping, I spent hours playing outside with my skipping rope smile

We had a long back garden and I had a Space Hopper. Blissful sessions up and down the path.

My favourite activity as a child was roller skating, and my skates were my pride and joy though I was banned from wearing them in the house after I banged my mother’s shins in the kitchen.
I wore them at every opportunity and became quite proficient. I was quite sad when I finally out grew them and they were passed down to my sister. Ah happy days?

sarahanew Fri 05-Apr-19 16:49:16

When we were growing up we were outdoors all we could be. Make believe games in the garden, building dens, tea parties with teddys and dollys, then we went out for family walks or walks with friends and their dogs, we picniced all we could, out if parents could take us or just in the garden.... Everything we did was outdoors, the fresh air and sunshine did us good

grannysmith953 Fri 05-Apr-19 16:46:22

Beachcombing! My sister and I used to spend hours searching the beach for shells, coins and glass Tizer bottles which were worth 3d if we took them back to the shop. They were always full of sand, I don’t think we were very popular.....

I used to love making daisy chains, now enjoying teaching my gorgeous girls how to make them

I was a real tom boy so my favourite was making dens in the little wood near our house. I would take a jam sandwich and a bottle of water and have a picnic with my friend (usually a boy)!

rizlett Fri 05-Apr-19 16:34:43

Water fights - we were forever badgering our mums to see if the fairy liquid bottle was finished yet!

Those old style shaped ones from the 70's made perfect water squirters.

dirgni Fri 05-Apr-19 16:32:52

Playing outside, making dens in the undergrowth and in woodland glades. Riding bikes down country lanes with a picnic ,gathering wild flowers and fishing for tiddlers and tadpoles! We used to stay out all day and get home in time for tea. It was always warm and sunny in those far off days!!

Racing over to the running track right opposite my house. Started running at about 10 years old, and the sport became a great passion of mine.

Won a couple of School competition races, which did my confidence no end of good.
