If you're after ideas for what to read this summer, look no further than our round-up of the best summer reads for 2019.

One very lucky person can win all the books featured on the page - worth over £600.

To enter, simply tell us your favourite female character from a book (old or new and from any genre).

A winner will be drawn at random at midday on Monday 15 July. Usual terms and conditions apply. Note that because of the size and weight of the prize box, we are only able to deliver to mainland UK addresses.

That’s easy…George or rather Georgina from Enid Blyton’s Famous Five books. I modelled myself on her as a girl, and at 70 I still have many of her traits which have since become my own. My family call me Bob although my given name is Barbara - hence my username on Gransnet. I’ve always been a bit of a Tomboy, I like to keep my (now grey) hair short and love nothing more than walking in the countryside, and would still climb trees if only I could. I was bought up on a farm and spent hours building camps and going on adventures with my faithful dog, Peggy. I didn’t have a Kirrin Island, Smuggler’s Top or caves to explore but I did find many a derelict farm building which quickly became a camp, a haunted house or a castle!

All of these women but has no one mentioned Miss Silver from the crime detection books by Patricia Wentworth. I got so tired of the sadistic Scandi noir stuff that I've regressed to sedate detection. So much better for my dreams/ nightmares.

Roberta Steel from the series of Logan Macrae novels by Stuart MacBride. She's stroppy, impossible and behaves inappropriately. But hilarious.
