The thread is getting close to 1000 posts - the maximum number we can have on a thread - so we've made a new thread for when this one is full which you can find here.
We roamed free In the late 40s looking for wildlife on the hills, especially snakes. The thrill of turning over a piece of wood or discarded sheet of corrugated metal and jumping back if there was a snake underneath. Our aim was to see an adder but we never did.
I was so lucky! I lived in a village surrounded by woods, streams and some large ponds. I used to spend ages damming streams, trying to make pots with the clay from the stream beds, climbing trees (and getting stuck!), skating across the ponds in winter. I loved reading as well. I think back to those days and thank my lucky stars for having had such a wonderful childhood - well done Mum and Dad!
My friends and I used to love playing "Knocking off Ginger"! Not a very nice game really when you think about it & we must've driven everyone down the street mad as it involved knocking on people's front doors and running away, usually in a fit of giggles!! My mum used to really tell us off if she found out! Happy Days!!
My nan lived on a caravan and it was surrounded by garden gnomes and forest. To me it was a magical garden. Every Easter we used to do a Easter Egg hunt, come rain or shine and would get so excited that the gnomes and magical forest creatures had bought us all Easter eggs. I still love that time of year and cherish those fond memories.
In Summer, I used to love climbing the old apple tree with my little brother. It was always a challenge to see how far up we could climb. It still stands there in my garden, almost waiting for me. My niece and nephews climb it now.
In winer though, we used to play scrabble with my Mother. It is one of my fondest memories and it still my favourite board game.
French Elastic, sometimes we used a dustbin to hold one end of the elastic! If no friends were available, (I was an only child), I loved magic painting books or painting paper doilies.
Easy! Anything to do with horses. Riding them, reading about them, doing jigsaws with pictures of them, spotting them in fields, dreaming about them, pretending to ride them... You get the picture!
I loved fishing for sticklebacks in a stream with my Dad , playing Two Ball, Skipping and complicated Elastic games with my friends outdoors, when the weather was fine. Also Kiss Chase on roller skates . It was easier to catch the boys! My favourite indoor activity was making endless patterns with my Spirograph set . Happy uncomplicated days of childhood !
