I'm adopted and my real mum bought me a beautiful doll that ironed and dusted. She also bought me a Alice in Wonderland board game which I played with friends outside in the summer and we loved as there was water involved.

I read The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe, it was magical

Building an Igloo on a mirrored tray and lots of cotton wool, with my little brother following instructions in an encyclopedia.

Conkers! This was a mixed sex activity in my day; no quarter given because you were a girl and the boys didn’t always win, either. They used brute strength, straight into the target, whereas us girls were more subtle, seeking to strike at potential weak spots...

Childhood memories: from 1945 to the early fifties, playing gruesome "pretend " games of pirates and tropical explorers across the tiny back gardens of our street, or in the car free street itself. Mothers summoned us for tea by simply shouting out of upper windows. Later, on my second hand bike, riding alone for hours to the far edges of Edinburgh carrying sandwiches often filled with sugar or a scrape of meat paste which was all rationing allowed.

Spent hours making mud pies with my sisters. Just needed a stick for stirring, colourful weeds, a bit of water, plenty of mud and masses of imagination

Making a tent in the garden with an old bedspread,and having a dolls tea party in it.

Dabstones and Jacks were a great favourite. Two balls, skipping, French skipping and hula hooping were good too.

A Dolls House, I always imagined the family that lived in there, the cosy rooms, the pretend fire and kitchens, the mother always in an apron...how I wished I was one of the family.

Going for walks round all the miles of country lanes near our home - no-one knew where we were - couldn't do that today

Playing ' Horse Riding'. We used to gallop, canter & trot all round the garden pretending we were riding horses. We could spend the whole morning at it. We made little jumps too & a washing up bowl was a water jump.
I did have riding lessons for a while & loved them until I had to choose between that & dancing lessons- dancing won but I did ride again when I got older.

Two-ball against the outside wall of our house. Lots of jolly rhymes to chant, whilst throwing and catching the balls, and lots of tricks to chuck in, when you got good at the basics!

My Stamp Collection, from the age of 10,k spending hours after school looking and placing carefully all the wonderful stamps from countries never yet heard of !

Laying in my bed listening to my personal stereo (loved the orange covers) lost in a Nancy Drew or Hardy Boys book.. "One more chapter mum"...

Loved, what we called American skipping, you used to knot all different coloured elastic bands together, then two people with the circle round their ankles(or chair legs) and the middle person had to do different skipping tricks.

Holidays in Swanage in a little tincan of a caravan; sitting on the caravan step shelling peas, and my Dad rubbing the sand out from between my toes.

We used to play croquet in the summer my gran's garden, the whole family joined in and then we would have a lovely afternoon tea, all homemade of course. Lovely memories x

My favourite memory is sitting by the fire on a winter's day listening to the afternoon play on the radio with my mother trying to teach me how to knit.

From the age of 5, my twin brother and I used to take off, down the steps, cross the lane, over the stile, across the flat field (sometimes there was a bull there, so you had to be careful), tumbling down the hill (the relief of getting past the bull!) to our sanctuary: the stream. That was our private world. We conjured up an island, rapids, cataracts, the throne, and a new wigwam every year as soon as the bracken was out. Magical.

I loved playing in the wood behind the house, all my playmates were boys, so we climbed trees , slid down a grassy bank on cardboard into a swamp and used to see who could cross the swamp without getting our feet wet, it was possible but rarely happened! Happy days!

We used to play Risk, a classic board game, that was great fun for all the family.

I was thinking about this the other day. Many autumn afternoons were spent gathering the best leaves and making them into collages or printing pictures with them.

I used to love playing kerby in the street with my childhood neighbour friends. You don't see anyone playing this anymore.
