White lie......I’ve frequently told white lies....for the sake of humour.
For example......putting a gorgeous cake on a table in fron to guests I will tell them, tongue in cheek, that I spent ages making it. I keep it going until everyone truly believes and then let them down......it’s brilliant.......a good laugh.

Saying there is no bag of Thorntons fudge when my husband asks which I keep in a secret place in my bedroom.

I have been know to tell people I've enjoyed food they have cooked for me rather than hurt their feelings.

This'll sound awfully ungrateful of me, however I'm not one for birthday or Christmas presents and I've had to say "it's lovely" on several occasions when I know I'm going to have no practical use for what's been given...

When the doctor asked me how many units of alcohol I consume per week!

When my now grown up daughter was about 5 I began to suspect she was telling little lies. I did not want to confront her or make her feel bad so I casually told her that mummies had a special power that could help them tell when a child was lying. I said that when a mummy looked at her child's tongue she would see a black dot on it if the child was lying. After that if I had any doubts I just had to say show me your tongue and she would happily show me or press her lips tightly together. Either way I knew the truth.

When my DS lost a stone and asked me if he looked thinner - I had to say yes when to be honest, he looked just the same to me. Oh, the beauty of the the white lie to save our feelings and our blushes.

At least every year I thank my sister in-law for her Christmas gift which I’m afraid is always wrong in some way . I’m not ungrateful I know it’s the thought that counts but really she gets worse every year . I always say “thank you though it’s lovely “ so this year I’m going to suggest we donate to charity in lieu of presents so that someone who needs it can benefit .

Most recently last night, I gave my son a Coronavirus lockdown haircut. I told him it looks epic and I should be a hairdresser. The truth is it looks terrible from the back but it'll grow out quickly, I hope!

My mum always buys me liquorice allsorts at Easter, Christmas and birthdays as a special treat. She is now in her nineties and thinks they are my favourites. I have to say I love them as she makes a special trip to the shops to find them for me.
I have a love of sour confectionary and sherbet. As the for the liqourice allsorts, I eat the liquorice and throw the rest of the sweets away.

Years ago, when we were both young and struggling financially to bring our family up, I was cooking spag blog. A Daddy Long Legs flew into the kitchen and landed in the saucepan of boiling water with the spaghetti. I had no more in the cupboard to re-do so fished the now dead and boiled carcass out of the pan. I dished up and we were all happily eating when my husband (fussy eater) said "what's this?" and held up a Daddy Long Legs leg! I quickly took it from his hand and said "Oh, that's a piece of black cotton that was hanging off my cardigan". blush. 40 odd years later and I still haven't told him grin

When my children were very small. I would say it was really late and they’d stayed up late and it was time for bed - but it wasn’t. So I could watch tv!!

When I’ve had to . Usually to avoid an argument or hurting someone’s feelings. Sometimes for an easy life!

Dusting shop brought mince pies with icing sugar, removing from packaging and placing on my own plate, then passing them off as my own creation! wink

Whenever my wife, with dementia, forgets what I have told her. I do not refer to the first time I told her I simply tell her again and sometimes again.

There's often no way to cancel plans without sounding like a horrible person — especially when it's because you'd rather sit at home alone. If you have understanding friends, go ahead and tell them the truth. But sometimes it's so much easier (and kinder) to drop a bit of a white lie. I've done it many times and have stopped feeling guilty about it.

Rudegal Thu 23-Apr-20 03:24:03

Urmmm a few times grin

The white lie that affected me most was when we were younger we had a wine celler on my older brothers farm in Kidderminster. I loved the smell of it down there, the mustiness and dirt and heady alcohol from some of the barrels where my brother made his own brews, it was heaven. One day I decided to skip school to stay down there, I knew no-one would find me, I could prop the hatch open and climb out when school had ended. I bought food and drinks down and a blanket, my heart thumping I climbed down the steep steps, and as I reached the bottom, My younger niece appeared at the top and slammed the hatch down, and locked it!
She then shouted if I didn't give her my favourite doll and my treacle tart at dinner time, she would never let me out!
I promised her everything, but she still ran off and went to school, leaving me down there!
I was too scared to shout, so I stayed there until my Mum came looking, and she felt so sorry for me I didn't even get told off, but my older brother made me give my pudding up to my niece as a punishment!
