Interesting article on todays BBC website about pregnant women doing physical labour. There used to be a myth that women who did such labour gave birth easily. Not true of course. Human birth if left to its own devices has a very high attrition rate. Infant mortality, maternal mortality and birth injuries that ruin the lives of the women.
I find it sad though that the the way to sell improvements, around the world, is because they are better for the baby. The fact that without competent midwifery millions of women are condemned to death or life long suffering is still secondary.
Reflects their position in society - telling comment about the fact that women in Nepal do the hardest work because they have the lowest status.
