I have made some welshcakes

Does anyone use a traditional cast iron welsh bakestone on top of glass halogen induction? I need a new cooker anyway so going to buy one and give it a go. Unfortunately all electric or oil fired here. Wonder if it would work on the barbie!

The one I can never pronounce is by bargoed. Y astrid monach! Or something like that. It has a hospital and we used to have tribunals in the town hall opposite.

The trick is not to pronounce the diphthong at all, say:
C'phily. Without the welsh ll. Rhyme it will silly.
Cayerphilly - you would never hear.
Bit like P'Talbut

Ah. I can do the 'll'. That's good. Apparently I can't pronounce Caerphilly though. DH is Welsh and winces, so it's just That Welsh Cheese.

It's an funny one. There is no K in Welsh, so it's a hybrid spelling. The LL is soft in Welsh but for us anglo-welsh majority, it rhymes with telly.

What a lovely place name!

We had a lovely family holiday in Kidwelly last summer - all eleven of us! We rented a big house - complete with hot tub - right in the centre and had a great time. The castle was lovely, and the local pub was great!

I spent all my childhood summer hols in Kidwelly. I think I had my first kiss at a dance in the grounds of Kidwelly Castle. They say you never forget your first kiss. Well I am a bit vague. Not generally vague but about this first kiss. And yes welshcakes are best warm. They can be re-heated gently the next day. My best friend was at Swansea to study art and she doesnt care how they come. We have just got back from a beautiful if cold walk and enjoyed the welshcakes. Not all of them I hasten to add. Each time she eats them I get a different memory of her student days all told in a sing-song welsh accent. Very funny as she comes from the south-east.

Jeni thats right under the bridge onto the site.. it was a few years ago but the castle is just so beautiful , now I'm reminded I'd like to take my younger grandchildren there as they certainly have never been.. I'll have to look it up see what I can find..

The bridge on to the site? The dc loved and regarded the castle as their own private playground. Norman kept ye old moat cafe and we used to drop in regularly for coffee. We made many friends amongst the locals and got milk from the local farm, where my Italian cleaning ladie's husband was cow man

Hello flowerfriend and tanith I'm from Cardiff and was brought with with Welsh cakes cooked on a griddle. After my mother died 25 years ago, my father, who died last year at the age of 93, used to make his own until a year or two ago.
I also love lavabread from Cardiff Market. Rolled in oatmeal and with bacon - yum, yum! Really love that market. I went two years ago for the first time in 30 years and it hasn't changed a bit, still got wonderful fish stall and the animals and birds upstairs. This is the best I can do for daffodils!

I love welshcakes. Yummy.
My sons adore pancakes, but this year they can't get home for Shrove Tuesday, so I sent them a pancake recipe book as a bit of fun - with a note of my own recipe. Eldest son was so delighted he's put a photo of it online.

Jeni you were so lucky Kidwelly is gorgeous.. I think we had to drive through a flood last time we went there under a railway bridge I believe.

flower I didn't realise you needed gas to use a griddle I suppose it makes sense when its pointed out to you.. we eat our calorie laden welsh cakes spread with butter... oh my! I seriously need to bake some..

gracesmum Most of us on GN seem to have to be careful with our appetites - for food that is. tanith I use a heavy frying pan too as I have only electricity here and you need gas for a griddle. I was born in Llanelli.
