Help no baking powder !!!

I always use one third of Bicarbonate of Soda to two thirds of Cream of Tartar because Baking Powder often has aluminium in it.

green I would add a good couple of teaspoons of baking powder to plain flower for sponges and scones, and a bit less for heavier cakes with fruit in.

Cram of tartar and bicarb might do it!

I think it depends on the type of cake etc You can also make baking powder from bicarb and soda but I am not sure of the amounts - remember that from my school days!

I've run out of SR flour and want to bake a couple of things, so how much baking powder should I put in (eg per pound of plain flour)?

WEll i can report I waited until I could get some baking powder and the end result is fab,I got so carried away with my little self I did a coffee & walnut slab cake as well,so I can now show off when visitors come tomorrow.thanks for all the replies girls.

I used to make a lovely fruit cake that had bicarb+vinegar as the raising agent.It also had Guinneas in it -or was that a different cake?
I'll try to find the recipe.

I decided to wait until this morning and go over to Tesco's and buy a couple of tubs of baking powder,didn't want the chance of recipe not turning right as DSs new girlfriend coming for lunch to-morrow and would rather have cake rising properly than coming out looking like biscuits,first impressions and all that.glass I am going to spend an hour or two on the UK Living site to gather some more recipes they look really good.Thanks.

glamma I had the opposite problem yesterday GD wanted to bake scones but I had no SR floor as I always use the Bero Scone recipe, so I went on line and got a recipe from Uk living Food for scones with baking powder and I will never again use the Bero recipe, they were the best scones I have ever made

I have SR flour so may try that if not I will go to Tesco's to-morrow and stock up,local shop does not stock anything other than frozen/papers/sweets.Thanks girls for reply's xx

Didn't think that you may have SR flour, if so it will be fine.

You could use some bicarb if you have any. Otherwise I can only suggest you try to introduce more air, perhaps by separating the eggs and whisking the whites. Do'nt you have any shops nearby?

Are you using SR flour? Don't do what I once did and put in bicarb by mistake (the two tubs look the same). It tasted very odd!
