Snails from the garden , could you?

I might try! You have to purge them first to get rid of any toxins.
I have loads of the blighters. Will have to get Gary collecting.
I MIGHT even be able to catch some myself as long as they don't get spooked and run!

Yes I was just reading about the purging , it gets rid of the grit in their gut too.. still not sure I could , I always get the eeby jeebies when I see them boiling crab or lobster.

I can't understand why anyone would want to eat them! Are there any health benefits? What about slugs?

Ugh! My grandson used to pop snails in his mouth when he was a toddler - we would hear the shell knocking against his teeth!!

Never tried them .i have eaten snails though. Quite nice. Taste a little like ox liver to my thinking!

My nephew ate a slug when a baby! SiL saw him chewing and fished the skin of the slug out of his mouth! Better with garlic butter I expect! Not my favourite item on the menu!

Anagram the lady in question said that they were low in fat high in protein and free. She keeps them and feeds them lettuce and bread crumbs to clean the gut then purges them.. she also collects weeds and nettles to eat ..

I used to eat escargots often in France, until I realised they were really just slugs with shells. I found they mainly tasted a bit earthy, like mushrooms, but mainly of garlic butter.

Snails cooked in garlic butter and served with a champagne cocktail are delicious. You have to feed them a milk diet for a while though to make them nice to eat, according to DH, so I wouldn't recommend just frying up ones from the garden, at least not without a little research first.

Aah... champagne cocktails and garlicky snails.... romantic nostalgiatastic

Think I'll just stick with the champagne cocktails!

I have a 'thing' about slugs - I shudder when I see one, though I have no problem with snails, in fact I love watching them. Found a slug-trail on the bedspread the other morning when I made the bed....then discovered a large slug in a fold of it . It must have attached itself to Daisy the Cat's long fur and fallen off when she jumped on to the bed during the night . DH had to dispose of it - slug, not the cat!

I read an article about getting rid of slugs from your garden recently - the conclusion was that the best method was to go out at night and catch them, BUT the writer of the article recommended cutting their heads off with gardening scissors!!
Much as I dislike slugs, I just couldn't do that.

Slugs YUK!! nasty things , I catch them in the early morning and take them over to the golf course thats a minutes walk away and let them go, I don't actually find many anymore I guess I've just about cleared them.

My daughter once accidently washed a snail down the grate!! she rescued it! and put it some where else in her yard, she swore blind that the same snail was there the next season so she put a " T " on its shell names it Terrence! it was still there all year....but has now dissapeared. (shes moving house in approx 2/3 weeks and was going to re locate him at her new place in the park at the end of the street

I know that snails are really only slugs with shells, but I do quite like looking at them, especially at the patterns on their shells, and I try to protect them, but the cat had one last week, treated it like a little football. Hate slugs though, YUCK!!
