Why does it take 30 minutes to soften!

Greatnan Thu 11-Oct-12 13:29:10

Bog off, you drunken lot. It is strictly personal invitation only at my place. I can't have people hurling bottles into the ground-floor gardens.

About three!

annodomini Thu 11-Oct-12 12:31:06

We'd be sleeping on the balcony - if 'sleeping' is the right word...

yogagran Thu 11-Oct-12 11:56:19

Could be right, but this house is only at about 900 metres. Tea tastes fine - must do, I am having about ten cups a day.

annodomini Wed 10-Oct-12 13:56:11

I might have got that wrong. Might be 1000 feet?

annodomini Wed 10-Oct-12 13:54:46

The boiling point of water decreases by 1 degree Celsius for every 1000 metres in altitude - think that's right anyway. Tea was never quite right when I lived at 7000 feet in East Africa.

I think Ana has the answer grin

Greatnan Wed 10-Oct-12 13:46:09

I kept adding boiling water from the kettle. I am quite good at following the instructions on packets!

Ana Wed 10-Oct-12 13:42:09

Perhaps boiling temperature is lower in Switzerland! confused

yogagran Wed 10-Oct-12 13:37:21

Still pondering on the problem that greatnan has with cooking rice...!! I wonder if you boil it in enough water, it does absorb such a lot and that may be the reason that it stays hard?

Ariadne Wed 10-Oct-12 05:45:29

johanna that's what I do, only with the easy cook rice, as you don't have to rinse it. Brilliant.

annodomini Tue 09-Oct-12 23:20:28

Nothing wrong with your cooking, Greatnan.

Greatnan Tue 09-Oct-12 22:49:56

Anno -you were obviously very lucky to survive my cooking for a week! grin

annodomini Tue 09-Oct-12 22:13:09

I have a microwave rice steamer (Lakeland, long ago) which does it to perfection in 11 minutes.

johanna Tue 09-Oct-12 22:09:09

Sorry, you will HAVE lovely rice.
Oh, dear.

johanna Tue 09-Oct-12 22:06:27

greatnan , now I understand why you said that you do not post on the cookery threads. grin
Here is the one and only failsafe method:
one cup of rice ( tip in your smallest strainer and rinse in cold water under running tap )
Put in pan
Add two cups of COLD water and salt.
Bring to boil.
Turn to lowest heat, and 20 mins later you will lovely rice.
Not wet, or claggy.
Good luck.

Greatnan Tue 09-Oct-12 21:42:18

yogagran - that is exactly what I did. It still took much longer than ten minutes.

Ana Tue 09-Oct-12 21:36:47

Oh yes, we've had that argument too, yogagran...hmm

yogagran Tue 09-Oct-12 21:34:55

Not sure why so many people have trouble cooking rice. I buy the "easy cook" rice which is available in all supermarkets, measure a handful per person, into the pan, cover with boiling water, add salt, stir and simmer, uncovered, for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally till cooked. Strain and rinse with hot water and serve. Although my DH always disagrees with the rinsing in hot water - he says it should be rinsed with cold water to stop the rice cooking any more - I say that it makes the rice cold!

Because of the slight faff factor when boiling rice, I always cook 2 or 3 portions at a time and freeze what I don't use that day. Saves on electricity too.
