Favourite Comfort Food

Its below zero outside. Has been all day. I am just about to eat one of my favourite types of comfort food. Baked apple and custard. Hits the spot on an evening like this. Other items on my list would be home made pizza, toad in the hole and lasagne.
So, without any diet guilt or any nonsense of that kind... what are your favourite comfort foods?

Porridge, made with jumbo oats or oatmeal, cooked very slowly. I'm diabetic so can't have golden syrup or demarara sugar as I used to. I just love the smell and taste of good porridge.

Are there any other diabetic gransnetters? If so, what are your comfort foods?

I've just made a lemon drizzle cake & ate the end bit, still warm from the oven. Scrummy.

fluffy I discovered Chunky Kitkat with hazlenuts this week, I've had three [greedy emoticom]. There was also a peanut butter one - that might be next week!

Oooo yummy ideas - what about that thing where you wrap (cooked) leeks in ham cover in cheese sauce and more grated cheese on top and put til bubbling under the grill.

Or failing that beans on toast with a knob of butter in the beans on really thick white toast, black pepper. Followed by a kitkat(4finger) cup of tea and a sleep
great!

Agree totally with gracesmum about custard and rice pudding. Both these recently been on offer at our local Supermarket,so high consumption here.
Unfortunately offer no longer available, so it looks like half price choc.sweet selection instead!

I'm having a takeout Chinese tonight with my cleaner and Gardner. Tomorrow DD is coming with her SO and DGD. So we're having a takeout curry.
Very naughty but I can't make large meals anymore as I find it too painful

Probably wont have another take away for a month!

Have just had a new slow cooker delivered so will be back making lentil soup .
I use bacon ribs, lots of red lentils , carrots and onions and any other root vegetables left in the fridge .We like it so thick the spoon will stand up in it. It freezes well and is yummy

Don't you love it when people bring all that stuff into offices!
I would find it hard not to have the occasional cake I must say.
Soup, I say unto you constance - filling, warming and so many options. And stew - had a gorgeous one in the cafe at Ashridge estate the other day.

constance Fri 25-Jan-13 14:24:34

Thanks MiceElf, look forward to trying that, I am getting through a lot of dove's farm flour trying to revise my 'normal' recipes.
And yes, JessM - hospital advice to give it up. Trying to combat malabsorption of vitamins, calcium etc. Not a weight loss thing.
I just had a vision of those crumpets on a toasting fork that Gillybob mentioned.
Currently sitting in an office next to a plate of very aromatic cheese straws...

Like ana i'm not a sweet eater, but i love a beef or lamb stew with herb dumplings on top (not too often though wink).

Sorry, only just come back to this thread. I have just put my Swiss Cheese Bake in the recipes section, under meat confused, because there wasn't another section where it seemed to fit. Maybe there should be a comfort food section. Hope you enjoy it!! smile

gillybob Thu 24-Jan-13 13:10:20

Oh thank you for highlighting it Bags I didn't have a clue how to do it !

Trust me its scrummy.... smile

JessM Thu 24-Jan-13 13:08:36

constance welcome. Have your problems with gluten and lactose been diagnosed by a doctor? I ask because I keep hearing about people who have been advised by naturopaths etc.
Potatoes contain no lactose or gluten smile
I think we either like these foods because we associate them with happy memories, or nice warm glow in the tum on a cold day.

Bags Thu 24-Jan-13 13:05:39

Gillbob's Beef Brady recipe. It looks utterly scrumptious. I'm going to make it big time! smile

jeni Thu 24-Jan-13 12:44:34

Gillybob I can't find itsad can you highlight it?

MiceElf Thu 24-Jan-13 12:28:57

Constance, I put a recipe for orange and almond cake on there. Comforting, delicious (I think) and fairly healthy. Give it a try. It has no gluten and no dairy.

Bags Thu 24-Jan-13 12:14:58

Thanks, gbob smile

gillybob Thu 24-Jan-13 12:12:57

Oooops sorry Bags should have thought about that!

It is under the Beef section (but could easily be made with Quorn or similar to suit veggie).

It is called Beef (or lamb) Brady (well that's what we call it anyway)

My kids have always called it that, not sure where it came from???

smile

Bags Thu 24-Jan-13 12:00:53

What is the recipe called, gillybob? And which section will it be in – sweet, savoury, etc?

gillybob Thu 24-Jan-13 11:56:16

I have just added a recipe to the Food section, which is something I have made for years and seems to please everyone. My children have always called it "Brady" for some reason (don't know why?)and when my daughter and her friends come for dinner she always asks me to make one for them as she says it makes her feel all warm and cosy which I guess is what comfort food should do. smile

constance Thu 24-Jan-13 11:50:52

Desperately trying to develop new comfort foods to replace the ones am no longer allowed, ie anything with gluten or lactose. I am developing a taste for sunflower margarine but hot fresh homemade white bread with butter would have been mine. I think anything that reminds me of my mum's cooking, so possibly proper baked potatoes, fruit crumbles, even her liver and onions in bisto!
And she had a marguerite patten cookbook that I can still remember poring over, which had a recipe for some sort of cinnamony raisin danish with crumbly nutty topping. Mmmm. Yep, it is probably all about the fat!

absent Thu 24-Jan-13 10:14:26

You don't need much oil for slow cooking onions and, in any case, you need some fat in your diet.

hochiwich Thu 24-Jan-13 10:05:20

Something quick and easy. Egg and chips. Or slowly fried onions on bread and butter. No doubt all that oil isn't all that healthy but very comforting.
