What else can I do with crabapples?

I've just made 25 pounds of crabapple jelly, and cheered up / burdened family and friends with it.

Is there anything else that can be done? I need to know to prepare for next year, although I suppose I shan't get such a splendid crop then.

Wine?

I use it as a base for mint, rosemary or tarragon jelly too.

A quick google gives recipes for slow roasting them and for chutney.

Apple chutney is great.

Crabapples are a bit small for chutney . Like Mamie I make herb jellies, rosemary, sage and mint in my case. I also add blackberries to make bramble jelly, delicious on ice cream or as a hot pouring sauce.

We leave them on the tree and revel in the birds that are attracted to the fruit. blush

Varnish them and sell them as juggling sets!

If they are John Downie crabs you can actually eat them raw - if you don't mind them a bit tart (we like them!) We use them too in hedgerow jam, made with elderberries, sloes, blackberries, rowanberries and hawthorn berries. I am planning to make Sloe and Crab Apple Jelly this year, and Rowanberry and Crab Apple Jelly. Hedgerow fruit jellies look beautiful and make great little presents at Christmas - or before smile

Last year I found a recipe for pickling them. Worked well and made a lovely coloured pickle to eat with cold meat or cheese. If you can't find anything online, PM me and I will do my best to hunt through all my random pile of recipes from magazines and try and find it. Our crab apples will be ripe soon, so I need to get my act together.

Just made crab apple and blackberry jelly, looks good so far!
I think Rowantree is spot on, they can be added to most fruits to make a lovely jelly.

Ha, Ha! Nelliemoser, just seen your post. My husband keeps a pile of (small) stones beside the back door, to throw at cats using our garden. Ile replace them(the stones) with crab apples! in future.DH is grinning when I tell him this.
