Just out of interest, may I ask......

...How many of us old girls members of the senior generation now bake with grams, and how many with pounds and ounces?

I am in the latter camp. Probably because all my old cookbooks ars just that - old.

Sadly I have lost my original BeRo cook book and not too many years ago sent for the current one.Not the same at all.No very good Choc cake and no superb biscuit recipes which we all liked.

Granjura I wonder if the Be Ro book is the same version that I used when I first started making cakes with my Grandmother? I wish I still had it, there was a cake recipe in there that the family always referred to as "R's cake" because I always ended up making that one!

Nothing to do with lbs and oz but my first home in 1968 was 1,200, the next in 1971 1,700 and again in 1979 was 3,600. Not sure where I am going with this but it was all on one wage as I was a stay-at-home mum.

By contrast, my first caravan was 2,000 in 1990, sign of the times

In 1971 we got a mortgage on a good 3-bed detached house on one income of £1800pa. It was another three years before I got part time work work... 3 hours a week.

As I said grams and kilos I can just about cope with in cooking but when it comes to my own weight I still use stones and lbs. I can't be doing with just pounds either as they do in the US - its too big a number!
Also I can't get to grips with kilometres. I'd rather walk a mile - even though that's a bit further smile

still old school for me...i use my computer to convert cm into inches and grms into ounces...money well i find that too scary to covert back to LSD...

All the chat about 'miles per gallon' baffles me - where the hell do they buy gallons of petrol, so how do they know?

If a bar of chocolate had cost sixteen shillings in 1971 that would have been frightening - but to equate that to today's currency is ridiculous. It would only work if you were still earning the same amount - I know I was doing well then on £50 a week - £2,500 a year.

Thank goodness we got rid of all those ludicrous ancient weights and measures... cubits, anyone? Ells? Groats?

I use both according to the recipe though I prefer lbs and ounces - easier to read on my scales even without my glasses! Not so grams. If we came out of the EU could we go back to pounds and ounces again do you think? Ha ha

I am also in both camps; most baking in grams now, but my scales have both measurements, so if am using old cookbooks I can go back to Imperial.Can only think of my weight [though try not to!] in stones and pounds.Have to say, it has taken many years to think in grams/kilos etc.Oh, and I still like feet and inches too.

Pounds and ounces. My most used (not my favourite) is the 'Dairy book of home cookery' bought from the milkman. Easy cheap family meals. Nothing fancy. It's held together with Sellotape and is sticky. It's full of my little notes written in the margins.

I swap between lbs and grams for cooking - depending on the cookery book I'm using. Length - that's another matter. I cannot visualise a centimere and always think in inches. I must remember that a metre is just over a yard. When it comes to my weight it's stones and lbs. Don't ask me what I am in kilos.
