Sugar in food

There seemed to be a lot of articles about ditching sugar after Christmas so I've been doing my own research, reading articles and books and food labels and I'm stunned! It seems that the claim that the food industry adds loads of sugar to 'low fat, low carb' food is true. Special K, for example, has lots of added sugar which seems counter-intuitive for a product that is aimed at people wanting to lose weight. In addition, it seems the human body can't deal with this type of added sugar and turns it straight to body fat - no wonder so many of us are overweight!

I've been persuaded that we ought to be trying to ditch the sugar rather than counting carbs, fats or calories and have been doing so for the past week. It's been easier than any other 'diet' and the literature says that sugar is addictive and after a while we no longer have sugar cravings... is anyone else ditching sugar this year?

Half a teaspoon of cinnamon to a teaspoon of honey placed in the mouth and allowed to slide down the throat is good for colds and coughs.
My preferred naughty is a sandwich of whit bread with condensed milk inside. This comes from childhood when some Thursdays that was all there was to eat.
the current Save the Children advert of a poor English lad having to sleep in an unseated bedroom and eat a slice of toast with jam takes me back. That was normal where I grew up.

I've just finished a bowl of porridge, with a grated apple, some sultanas , a good sprinkling of cinnamon, and to top it all, half a desert spoon of manuka honey. It was made with half skim milk, half water. Now, food police - what's the best/worst part of my breakfast?
I have tried to reduce sugar since the festive over indulgence, but I can't say I find it easy.

Well I, feeling peckish, am enjoying a nice bit of bread and treacle. (Golden syrup)

Tomorrow the sticky keyboard will be cleaned.

Yes, as I said...

durhamjen Mon 03-Feb-14 21:06:31

The reason Margaret's link will not work is because she put :/ instead of ://
UNderneath the box, Margaret, where you write your message is a box that says converts link automatically. Just put a tick in there, and you will not have to remember what style of bracket you need to put.
As long as you start with http:// or with www. it will convert the link.

Ana Mon 03-Feb-14 21:04:02

Saves all the double brackets palaver!

Ana Mon 03-Feb-14 21:03:23

margaretm74, you could always just copy and paste the link, and click on the 'Convert links automatically' option below the posting box.

Thanks, djen. I see.

Teasing banter, jura.

Healthier than they were before when they just had glucose and sucrose, thatbags. Apparently replacing 30% of the sucrose with a similar amount of fructose makes them healthier, i.e. more healthy, than they were before!

And the link doesn't work! Can't find the server. Maybe it's just me.

granjura Mon 03-Feb-14 20:54:24

thatbags I am beginning to feel that you are rather picking on me... somehow. Water off a duck's back of course- but it is not pleasant or particularly funny- and bordering on the bullyish.

I am absolutely sure you knew I meant excessive amounts of the bad cholesterol- as you are an intelligent woman- and that it is an ailment in as much as it is dangerous.

Perhaps you would care to continue the conversation in my mothertongue smile

thatbags Mon 03-Feb-14 20:53:40

OH BOTHER!!!!

It does tell you at the bottom of the page below the message box that you type in to add a comment.

Here you go: http:/www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-18393391

What I did there is this:
1 typed two square brackets – copied your link, pasted it just after the two [[3 closed the double square brackets thus

margaretm74 Mon 03-Feb-14 20:48:11

I am being stupid can't do it, but you could copy and pasteif you were interested. I will try again another day

thatbags Mon 03-Feb-14 20:46:56

Is cholesterol an ailment? I thought it was absolutely necessary to every cell in our bodies! Learn something every day on GN grin

granjura Mon 03-Feb-14 20:44:54

cinnamon is of course very good against all sorts of ailments (cholesterol from the top of my head).

thatbags Mon 03-Feb-14 20:40:42

Whisky, of course is very processed wink

thatbags Mon 03-Feb-14 20:39:52

I've never added cinnamon. I might try that.
