height is usually the problem so we put the bread in the toaster sideways that way it fits, ours is a russell hobbs.

I have a Panasonic bread maker which makes different size loaves. The Dualit Architect Toaster we have had for a few years now seems to take most sizes of bread and makes nice evenly browned toast.

My sliced Paleo bread is often too high for my toaster - I just put it in sideways.

I have exactly the same problem Dualit - breadmaker - so I cut the slices in half - a winner really less bread so helps with the weight (not!)

It's the height not the thickness that's the problem.

Yes, Charleygirl it's a shame toasters pack up even when you spend a fortune on them. My last one did everything except make the beds but only lasted 18 months and it was past the guarantee stage. This Breville was bought cut-price and cost about £16.

Iam64 I pay as little as possible for a toaster because they never last long in my house. Around £20 or less appears to be average. I try to buy a "good" one in the sales so that I get better quality much cheaper. That is the theory.

I've got a cheap Breville toaster (matches the cream kettle and mixer perfectly) and it takes large thick slices of bread, as well as doorstep size ones I cut myself. Seems to be holding up ok - had it three years.

Our toaster gave up the ghost last week. I was shocked by the price of toasters, and decided to rely on the grill. Our new oven/grill goes off every time you open the door so never heats up to the level I believe is needed for satisfactory toast. I'm saving up for a new toaster - has anyone any recommendations for Galen?

A toasting fork and and a roaring fire? A gas fire will do at a pinch as we found out all those years ago during power cuts , probably at the time of the Three day week.Memory not so good these days!!

We have to cut the top crust of a ready sliced loaf to fit the toaster. We had to do the same with our previous toaster. Have you not got a grill facility on your oven? We use ours for crumpets and cheese on toast.

My Russell Hobbs takes largish slices.

I've got a grill. But a grill squashes the bread. Fine for a toasted sandwhich, but not for my soldiers. (For pate, soup or caviar!)

Have you thought about a George Foreman grill - mine makes great toasted sandwiches and adjusts to how thick the bread is.
