Tonight we had Chicken Kiev with Lyonnaise potatoes. I have to admit the CK was not made by me but a local butcher whose ready meals are really, really good but I did make the Lyonnaise potatoes myself and I know I shouldn`t blow my own trumpet but it was a good meal

I've got some lovely lamb chops in the fridge, but as I have been in bed all day with a rotten cold, I'm hoping they're gonna jump out and cook themselves. #somehope hmm

Mince N' Taties for us - DH's favourite and as he has spent all afternoon clearing leaves from the garden I decided to indulge him!

Quiche, salad and potatoes followed by baked apple (stuffed with mincemeat) and custard.

We had the most delicious fresh mackerel when we were on hols in Cromer a couple of months ago, done "panko" style, which is Japanese I think. So I'm going to try this tonight with cod bought at half price smile

Interesting that you soak the fillets in buttermilk before crumbing.

Will serve it with potato wedges and a salad.

A bought toasted pannini.

Also bought some reduced price produce ready in the fridge for tomorrow.
Not quite in the spirit of this thread!

re fish. For some reason my mum only bought mackeral and kippers.
I grew up thinking I didnt like fish much.
When I was married however I discovered all manner of fish, including white fish. Love fish now.

Fresh Mackerel

Our fish man gets it really fresh.

Last time he took the innards out, head off, normally I either bake it or fry it, but I recalled, when I was young we went out in our small boat and fished for it using a 'murderer' feathers attatched to hooks on a long line, and if you went through a shoal, you could have 5 fish on the line.

After dispensing the fish round the village, my Mum used to poach them.

I googled the recipes and poached in them in water till simmering.

Water had vinegar, peppercorns, bay leaf, salt

Once the simmer was reached, turn the heat off, and leave to cool.

Memories of the past were so tasty, bone removed easily

pompa - those mystery tins must have been something of a culinary lottery grin

Pompa I'm 70 next month as well. My birthday is the third, when's yours?

pompa Tue 18-Nov-14 18:14:43

vegasmags, when we were first married DW worked at a food cannery, she used to get unlabeled tins very cheaply, they were coded and we should have known what was in there. But it did not always work out and we had some weird combinations.

pompa Tue 18-Nov-14 18:12:20

70 next month and today was the first time ever we have eaten fresh mackerel. Trust me to find it at the end of the season. Delicious

Tonight I'm having Freezer Surprise. I defrosted something without really knowing what the hell it was. I'm not always as good as I should be about labelling home made stuff that I freeze. Now that the permafrost layer has melted, it appears to be some sort of stew so I have chucked some spuds in the pan and will hope for the best.

NanKate Tue 18-Nov-14 17:32:25

Sausages cooked in caramelised onion marmalade, roasted veg, peas and sweet corn and mashed spuds expertly pulverised by DH. Followed by the remains of the M and S trifle with a small meringue crumbled on top.

whitewave Tue 18-Nov-14 13:11:14

good to eat though! I actually think those underground hairless blind rats take a lot of beating although I don't think we eat them!!

lefthanded Tue 18-Nov-14 12:51:26

Monkfish wrapped in Parma Ham? Can I come to tea please whitewave! Just me - my wife doesn't like monkfish. (Actually I don't think she has ever tried it, she has just taken against the monkfish on aesthetic grounds. The adult monkfish is, after all, the ugliest creature that the Good Lord ever gave life to).
