I have just had my supper, 28 day aged Scottish beef rib eye steak, Jersey Royal potatoes, (left over from the weekend) British grown Little Gem Lettuce, British grown tomato (ditto) and a slight deviation for French Dressing.

All was from Lidl, I just hope the radio drowned out any noises of sheer delight that I may have been making! Not only was the steak full of flavour, it was so tender!

There was an article in the Telegraph on Saturday, banging on yet again about the fact that the big 4 are losing customers to Aldi and Lidl. The article also showed a price comparison, and the equivalent of the steak that I have just eaten cost just over twice as much in Sainsburys. It also pointed out that far fewer people are doing the one weekly big shop, preferring to use apps etc to keep up to speed with bargains and then adjusting their shopping accordingly

My nearest Tesco and Sainsburys are that bit too far away to make them viable, which means I have Waitrose as geographically the nearest at around 8 miles, Lidl & a very small Co-op next at approx. 9.5 miles, and Morrisons & Asda at around 10.5 ish. Must say I can't stand Asda, althought the staff are lovely I feel as if I am shopping in an undersized French cash & carry, I think it's the lighting they have, it always looks as if the builders left before they finished!

Do you still do one big shop and get most things from one place (leaving aside local butchers, bakers and greengrocers) ?

I buy a lot from shop in the next village as we regard it as important to keep it alive.

Big things (bottles, cereals etc.) and other things that I cannot get locally I get delivered from Tesco, because their ordering system and indeed everything about their online service is superior to any other I have tried - and the prices are good - they price match with Aldi and Lidl and send me vouchers for the difference.

Occasionally I go down to Monmouth to their Lidl - and they are of course excellent.

Shopping anywhere from here uses lots of petrol!

I now buy everything from Aldi in one weekly shop including household cleaning products and pet food. This saves me £30 per week!

I used to shop in Sainsbury's for food and drink and Wilkinsons for everything else but I now scan quickly through my Aldi receipt to give me a rough idea of what I will need the following week.

I won't go back to any of the big 4.

In my area we have a big Tesco, a slightly small Sainsbury, and an Aldi. So generally I do one shop from Tesco a month and have it delivered, of all the things that are cheaper there.

I then do a shop at Aldi and buy things like their lovely lavender washing liquid, their camembert and various other cheeses, really nice bread and meat and cold meats.

If I haven't been able to buy some things I want from either of those, I go to Sainsbury's, who will do things like decaff ground coffee for DBH.

Fresh fruit and veg tends to be bought at the market, and steak and joints at our local butcher.

BUT - right opposite Sainsbury's, a new Lidl is being built!!! I used to shop there when I lived in Lincs and Kent, so am getting quite excited. I feel a bit sorry for Sainsbury, though. It's quiet in there as it is.

As mentioned in the OP, no "big" shops within walking distance and for my nearest town there is only 1 bus a week!

We do have a very good village shop which I use often, mainly for the odd bits of veg and when I have run out of things such as sugar.

Mishap I have the petrol problem too, I think it's another example of having to compromise, we live in a lovely rural area with lower crime rates (and therefore insurance) but there is always some sort of pay off, IYKWIM.

Anyway, early night for me, better get into bed while there's still a chance of getting a comfortable space!

Good night all moon

When I lived near you phoenix we would go and shop in Morrisons [Bideford] best value and good products. We then bought other things from all the independent shops in Torrington[wonderful butchers there called Ware I think.] Where I live now, is not anywhere near a Morrisons or Aldi or Lidl , so Sainsburys Waitrose or Tesco.Small shops for fresh things mid-week.Was in Witney today and called into M&S and we bought the 'dine in' option for £10, which in fact will make 2 dinners for us, not just one. A whole small roast chicken, a side dish and a strawberry tart and a bottle of white wine.Just added a few of our own veg to that.

They might even sell Cravendale milk in Bideford! grin

There are a few things that I make a special trip to Aldi for. Otherwise it's Tesco for convenience, both are in my town. Asda and Sainsburys are about 10miles away. Morrisons is about 3 miles out of town but the only thing we go there for is their cooked breakfast!
