I love celery; raw with any blue cheese; braised as a side vegetable; indispensable in stews and casseroles. However, DH hates it in any form so any vestige of it has to be removed from his plate before it goes to the table or he will spend he whole meal pushing it around the plate, looking gloomy!

All my family including GC like celery, cooked or raw. GC are particularly fond of it in a cheese sauce,but then they all love marmite.

Use one like this! It peels very finely. I have three of these only one of which really works well but they are very inexpensive. Not pretty but they actually work.

Like Tegan I loathe celery and go to great lengths to avoid it or pick it out of a dish, cannot eat it raw but absolutely love home made cream of celery soup. Weird? confused

I love celery and am really sad that I can no longer buy tins of celery hearts. Has anyone seen them? They seem to have just disappeared from supermarket shelves.

Dislike the taste of celery and yet celery soup is one of my favourites. Only read up the other day how to feep it fresh ie wrap in foil and keep in the fridge. I've got some at the moment that is pretty old [but still looks fresh]. D'you think it would have any goodness left in it if I made it into soup or should I just throw it out? If I am going to eat it with, say cheese I buy celery hearts which are less stringy [imo].

I buy packs of fresh, ready chopped celery, carrot and onion in Waitrose called "Soffrito". It is the versatile basis for many dishes and I dint know how I managed without it.

It is very easy to peel very stringy celery using a speed peeler as for other vegetables there is very little waste.

That's the trinity for Provencal too, isn't it? The celery cooks down until it's just part of the sauce* - no discernible strings or, come to that, many actual slices.

*Particularly in the slow cooker.

I always put celery in a stew or soup, there's a stew in the slow cooker at the moment with celery in it. I do know people (vegetarians) who detest celery and can barely say the word.

Italian chefs call onion, carrot and celery the Holy Trinity and use it as the basis of many dishes- never seen them string the celery though. I just pull it off as I chop it.

Sieving celery could be a job for life! Cut it into shorter pieces and the strings will be shorter too.

The outer stalks are stringier than the ones more toward the centre of the plant. Keep them for when they will be cooked for longer, in soups or casseroles, and use the inner ones when you want longer, more tender pieces. Chucking them in when you make stock adds flavour, too, and you can discard them when you strain the stock.

confused pinkscorpio celery is stringy if you remove the stringy bits there won't be anything much left.. chop it cook it eat it.

How do I remove the stringy bits from the celery before cooking. It takes me ages to sieve it after cooking. HELP!
