Nowadays, if you are in town shopping and feel peckish, there are a plethora of coffee shops which will sell beverages and snacks. There's the ever-present McDonalds, Burger King and KFC franchises. Some of the larger shops might have their own restaurants, and there are often small independent cafes as well.

I can remember the arrival of the first Wimpy Bar in my home town, Newport in South Wales, to rival the Lyons Tea House and other independent cafes, but the place that evokes most memories was the covered market. In there was a stall that just sold just one product - 'Faggots and Peas'. There was a huge cauldron that must have held gallons of the stuff. The smell of it would pervade the entire market. It would be ladled out into plain cream-coloured bowls and the patrons would sit on wooden benches as they ate it. Were there any similar stalls in your home towns, and what did they serve?

The only equivalent that I can think of was a Pie Mash and Liquor shop I never liked it but a friend went there whenever he could he would have a double helping too..

No, nothing similar.
I like the idea though.

When I was a child we used to go to Hull open market to visit Carver's Fish & Chip stall. This was all under canvas with long trestle tables and wooden benches. In those days Hull was one of the biggest fishing ports so there was plenty of fresh fish, chips, patties and mushy peas. Carvers now have a proper fish restaurant in the city. My DD and Sil have lived away from the city for 18 years but still go for patty & chips whenever they return.

When I grew up in Derby, one of the entrances to the covered market had half a dozen pikelet stalls down one side. Very odd as, surely, a pikelet is a pikelet! confused
