Looking for main course ideas please. Mussels in white wine and what to serve with them?

Bought a pack of mussels and am going to have them for dinner tonight - but what should I serve with them? I don't think they're enough to have just on their own... Have tagliatelle in the store cupboard or could lift some new potatoes - may have garlic bread in the freezer... ? Suggestions anyone - what do they serve in restaurants with mussels in white wine?

Garlic bread to mop up the juice!

Should I maybe do a salad with it too, have tomatoes and lettuce growing?

Mmn away to look for the garlic bread!

Chips are the classical accompaniment, but I vote for garlic bread!

Chips!

Definitely pasta. I usually make an Italian recipe. There are plenty online if you Google main course mussel dishes.

If I were cooking a classic Moules Marinière, I would serve them simply with crusty French bread. If I were making a mouclade, I'd serve with rice.

Frites, it is the Belgian national dish.

Pommes frîtes - Belgium's gift to the world of gastronomy - with a soupçon of mayonnaise...

There is a bit more than Frites but they are really good here.

Best ever wine, coconut milk, finely chopped onion, lemongrass and a sprinkling of chopped coriander! Serve with chunky bread, get this at The Admiral Nelson, Braunston, Northamptonshire next to the canal for a bit of gongoozling!

Many thanks - will have to try them again soon with those suggestions!

Wish I hadn't read this thread. Was having a 'back of the freezer' cook up. Gone off my vat of Quorn Tex-Mex veggie chilli from the Slimming World cookbook now. Having visions of mussel meals I have enjoyed ...

Me too..

My father took us all to Belgium late one summer, 1970 I think. We had been away somewhere else but he wanted to get away for a few days and had loved Belgium as a young man. We went to a moules and waffles café and had hot red wine with sugar around the rim.

He ordered for us all, there were six in my family and we weren't very old - so you can imagine my parents' horror when just after they had started to serve us from the bucket of moules and tureen of frites, another five buckets and tureens arrived! grin

I seem to remember finishing all of my moules, although not all of the chips, and from then on I was hooked. My mother had cooked mussels before, quite a few times, but my guess is that she was a little more sparing with the wine and cream.
