Porridge

Trying to be healthy with breakfast time at least so have been having porridge in the morning. But I'm starving by 10:30am! At least when I was having toast I'd last till 12. Does anybody else find this with porridge? So much for slow release energy... Not sure I'm convinced...

I use Mornflake porridge oats (a local brand.) They are filling and the texture is good. I really dislike the texture of the instant stuff at all.

I add no more than 1tsp of demerara sugar or maple syrup. Sometimes I add banana but I don't like chewy bits spoiling the texture of the porridge.

I am quite happy munching through a bowl of nutty muesli though. I am fussy about my breakfast cereal. grin

I've bought the Irish one, I was seduced by the packaging and free scoop! It's Flahavan's. I'd hoped it would be better than the sachets, it's certainly cheaper. The oats are a lot finer but I didn't find the 30g portion suggested filled me up.

I use ordinary portage oats- quite coarse ones and soak them in milk as soon as I get up.
Then add a mixture of seeds and nuts, and a stewed prune and apricot or some fresh fruit.
The a dollop of plain Greek Yoghurt - full fat, none of that lowfat rubbish.
No added sugar at all.
You need the fat and protein from the yoghurt and the seeds and nuts to last all morning I think, but I eat breakfast around 8.30 and don't need anything else apart from a tea or coffee till one o'clock usually.

It works for me I never think of having anything else before lunch. I would be hungry sooner with toast.

I do the same, Sadiesnan. However I've had one which was new to me, Irish in a cylinder, Canavan's (?) a few times in a cafe and at DD's and thought it made especially creamy porridge. Has anyone else tried it?

I buy a giant bag of ordinary porridge oats. I find these make the most filling porridge and it's so much cheaper than the quick sachets. I understand the ordinary is also better for you. Porridge fills me up all morning.

I like to add dried fruit for sweetness to the oats at the beginning and use skimmed milk. Just before its done I add a big handful of frozen berries (more economical than fresh and no waste), they defrost in the hot porridge. I then add some nuts and a little agave syrup if the fruit is a bit too sharp.

Can't agree, as I much prefer the instant porridge myself, different texture perhaps? Instant Scots Porridge oats which come in small paper 'bags' within the box, only need a small amount of milk and am now addicted to the blueberry ( I think it is) flavour. DH adds a few nuts and raisins to his.
put off porridge as a child as always found it so thick.

Hi quaker oats and a pinch of salt plus nutella or jam or lemon curd or syrup or treacle pushes the morning medication down and fills me till dinner time. Made as thick as mashed taters - yummy. Instant porridge = yuck!

That's how I would really like to eat porridge Anno. Plenty of salt and cream of the top of the milk. In fact I may start using cream again and I add home grown blueberries.

I am a poor example of a Scot as the very thought of porridge makes me gag. I used to have to eat it when we went on holiday to my granny's. She would put salt on it in the traditional manner and ate it with the top of the milk. Eugh!

just had my porridge ..not the instant sort,3 TBSP water in the microwave 2 mins low fat fruit yoghurt on top with strawberries,raspberries and blueberries topped off with a sprinkling of sweetner should see me through till about 2,when its time for corn cakes topped with humous.

I'm with Tanith on this one - I use proper rolled oats as opposed to the 'quick ' ones - mixed with water, some granulated sweetener and topped with up to 15g of Chai seeds which are full of protein and amino acids - yes they are expensive but a bag lasts me for ages and ages and as they are tiny and tasteless they can mix with any food which needs a protein 'kick' to get that fuller for longer benefit smile one and a half to two minutes in the microwave and I'm good to go till lunchtime, sometimes even longer!

The Chai seeds which I use are from Holland and Barrett - Chia bia - they are often in the 'buy one get one half price' sale.

rosesarered You don't need special microwave oats to make porridge in the microwave. Ordinary rolled oats work perfectly well.

I used to get hungry by 11 and go for the biscuits after having porridge, but now I eat larger portions ( half a cup with a whole cup of milk, cooked in mocrowave) and add ground flaxseeds when cooked ( after a sprinkling of cinnamon). It keeps me going until or beyond lunch.

Porridge doesn't fill me up to lunchtime but a full fat yogurt does (which probably is smaller portion)
As for Nutella ?, was known as 'Devil's poo' by neighbours' children...that was enough to put me off ?

Porridge seems to last longer than toast for me, I use the microwave porridge oats, takes 2 mins. if still hungry, have toast and marmalade after?

Nutella is just the most sickly thing ever- and the thought of the tons and tons of palm oil used, just makes me feel sick (not as sick as the orang-outangs and the rain forest though- oh dear).

I tried the instant porridges but find they are not nearly as filling as proper Scotts Porridge Oats I have a bowl 3/4 times a week with a tiny bit of syrup other mornings its shredded wheat with a sprinkle of Stevia sugar. I usually have some soup around 1pm so it lasts me a few hours.

Yes, Teetime, I have the Big Bowl version of Quaker Oats So Simple. I felt like eating a warming breakfast after walking in an icy wind. I don't normally have breakfast at all. I also added a teaspoon of Nutella! blush I do find porridge fills me up for longer, have been known to eat it instead of lunch or dinner.

Instant unfortunately has a much higher GI (glycemic index) as 'proper' oats - in fact wou should aim for the larger ones. They are a bit too coarse for me, so I mix one packet of normal Quaker oats with 1 of the large chewy ones- and that is perfect. I mix a bowl of sugar and cinnamon (also cholesterol lowering) and have a little spoon on that- the only sugar I have most days (unless from fruit)- none in coffee, tea, rooibosch, no fruit juice, etc.
