I bought some of this today to fix some sugar paste figures onto GS's birthday cake but there were no instructions about how to use it and I read on the internet that it can 'melt' sugar paste. I don't want it to do that as it took me b****y ages to make the figures! Anyone used it?

I didn't even know such a thing existed. Wouldn't icing made simply with icing sugar and water do the job? That's all I've ever used to secure cake decorations, though I've never made or used sugar paste figures - I'm just talking about plastic figures or decorations.

I have used www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FINEST-PROFESSIONAL-EDIBLE-GLUE-30ML-BOTTLE-4-ICING-SUGARCRAFT-BAKING-FOOD-CRAFT-/150788807327?hash=item231bb69a9f:g:4EgAAOSwstxVOPYp
but not for heavy figures, and it is fine. I used to use egg white which works just as well. I keep in my cupboard a tube of ready to use royal icing for anything to fix upright, it comes in a few colours.
Is this for you Minions? I hope you are pleased with them.

Yes, shysal it is for the minions! They aren't upright ones, they're flat, but I have read if you use too much of this stuff they'll slide ( if they don't melt!). How much is too much, and would you use a cotton bud to put it on with, or what?

Is your glue similar to mine? I used a paint brush finer than that for nail polish, to just moisten. Maybe it needs to dry slightly until tacky rather than slippery.
Good luck!

Looks like it, but mine is in a tub, and doesn't have a brush. I have some fine paint brushes. I'll use one of those. I've got all the pieces sorted now, so it's just a case of seeing if they'll fit onto the cake!! When it's finished I'll take a photo - should be good for a laugh! DH said this afternoon that he didn't know why I was agonising about it as its fate is to be utterly destroyed anyway! He doesn't understand - he's a bloke!

Well, here it is! A bit 'rustic' in parts but the boy won't mind! I hope the glue works because I have to drive eight miles with it in the car tommorrow and I don't want to find all the bits have dropped off on the way!

Greyduster Fri 05-Feb-16 14:30:51

Why do they come out upside down!!

shysal Fri 05-Feb-16 16:00:41

Wow! The Minions are fantastic and so neat! How clever you are! I am sure the cake will travel well. I had visions of figures on the sides , which could have been scary. I hope your DGS has a lovely birthday.
My heart is always in my mouth when I deliver cakes to DD2's, only a mile away but about 20 speed bumps on the way!

Funny you should say that - I made GS an Octonauts (his favourite to programme at the time) cake a few years ago and that had 'sea creatures' hmm on the sides. Well, it did until it arrived at DD's, by which time they'd all dropped off! I had to quickly stick them back on with jam! Thank you for your kind words!

Well, ten out of ten for the edible glue - none of the bits fell off! smile

Success! Well done! I bet he loved it.

No they haven't, Greyduster - they seem to be spamming all the food threads. I've reported them,
