Has anybody got a recipe for stovies please? My mother used to make it but I have no idea how.
I made M0nica's recipe, and it was lovely, though I put in a wee bit too much milk!
I'll try AuntieFlo's next, but think I might leave out the garlic!
The recipe that Dmil gave me for her fabulous cheese pudding is much the same as MOnica's one and I might have to make it again.
DH wishes I could make bread pud to my mum's recipe.........

I know what you mean. When DMiL died, our immediate family reaction was no more grandma casseroles. Since then we have got in the habit of discussing after each family death what dish the departed made that we will miss and cannot recreate. Their signature dish, so to speak. For my DS it was a pasta dish she made that we have now named after her; for DM her curries, DF his meatloaf.
Family discussions continue as to what my unrepeatable dish will be. I trust no definitive decision will be needed for some years 
My mum used to make
delicious rissoles and taught me how to make them when I was little. I made them the other day but my 35 year old son assured me that mine never taste like Granny used to make!!! 
Daddima my recipe for that cheese pudding is as follows:
-Ingredients- 3 oz bread crumbs, 1/2 pint milk, 4 oz grated cheese, 2 eggs, 1 oz butter, 1/2 tsp mustard, dash of Worcester Sauce
-Method- Put breadcrumbs in a bowl with mustard and Worcester Sauce. Warm the milk and pour it over the breadcrumb mix. Leave it to soak for 20 minutes. Stir in the cheese, separate eggs and stir in the yokes. Whisk the egg whites until stiff and stir through the mix. Put in a buttered deepsided dish, put in the oven and bake at R4 for 45 minutes.
It is a family favourite.
Another favourite, which was made up when we intended to have bacon steaks, sweetcorn and potatoes for lunch - except I had forgotten to buy the potatoes. Cook 2 oz of rice per person. Mix with the sweetcorn and add a large piece of butter. Make a fairly thin cheese sauce, not too much. Put rice mix and grilled bacon on a plate and pour the sauce mainly over the bacon and some on the rice.

a South African friend gave me this recipe that sounds similar, she called it Cheese Pie. it uses cubed bread, instead of breadcrumbs, and paprika instead of mustard.
Cheese Pie
4-6 ozs cheese, grated
1 oz marg
3/4 pint milk
2 egg , beaten
2-3 slices white bread, cut into small squares
* optional, garlic paste,
paprika
1 round pyrex dish
Pre heat oven to 180
Using the one dish for economy - saving washing up.
( if using garlic paste, put into bowl before heating milk.)
1/ Place milk and marg into dish, then iinto microwave for 1.5 minutes
sufficient to melt marg. Stir.
2/ Add diced bread, lightly stir into milk mix.
3/ Stir in beaten eggs and 3/4 of grated cheese.
4/ Sprinkle remaining cheese on top and lightly dust with paprika for a
dash of colour.
5/ Place dish in oven, middle shelf, and bake for approx 45 minutes.
I you feel that it is cooking too quickly, lower heat after 30 minutes.
The pie will rise, and the top willhave a light crusty look and a sort of souffle texture underneath.
Serve with salad and sliced tomatoes.

Don't want to query your recipe tanith but do you really mean condensed milk not evaporated?
Mine all loved tuna casserole (but not as you know it) I don't even know if I ever had a recipe.
A tin of tuna, a chopped onion , 3 hard boiled eggs tin of condensed mushroom soup large tin of condensed milk, large pack of plain crisps.
Start layering the tuna,egg and onion then a layer of crisps, layer more tuna,egg,onion then before putting on the final layer of crisps mix the condensed milk and mushroom soup together and pour gently over the casserole before adding the rest of the crisps. Into the oven for 40mins
I still make it for myself occasionally although OH turns his nose up.
I do the Leek and cheese thing too .
A very cheap and easy thing we do is ...
Chop a small onion
Chop up a small pack of bacon
Fry till browned , add a tin of tomatoes and simmer for 15 mins
Mix with hot cooked pasta, top with strong cheese and grill
Serve with crusty bread ! Serves 3 people .
Beat up 2 egg yokes and 1 white , add s&p . soak slices of bread both sides then fry in a little olive oil . serves 2 . My Mum used to make this when the cupboard was bare .
Many years ago I made a cheese pudding from a recipe out of a magazine either Woman or Woman's Own. It was very tasty, nourishing but more important in those days ,cheap. I lost the recipe and when much later I tried to replicate it it was never right.
My late mother made a lovely cheese pudding. I know it involved cheese, eggs, breadcrumbs, milk, and mustard. I have never been able to replicate it.
My own children like marzetti. Mince, onions, garlic, one tin condensed tomato soup, one tin condensed mushroom soup, and parmesan to finish.
My father used to wrap baby leeks in bacon, smother in cheese sauce, then bake in the oven.
