I have looked online and the nearest I get is the amish cake but the one I remember tasted of apple. we all shared the yeast starter and it tasted lovely. I would love to make it again

I have it ethelbags1 , but it its very long telling you what to do from day 1 to day 10 is that the one you want? My grandsons wife gave it to the family last year and we all made it and passed it on... it was lovely its called the Herman cake (friendship cake)

I just reread the recipe and realised that she actually gave me the original yeast starter so I don't actually know how you make the starter ..

That sounds like the one I made years ago tanith but before you cook the cake you share the yeast starter with a friend and she shared it with another friend and so on, this recipe, although I will try it, does not say how much to share with a friend.

ethel my recipe says divide into 4 portions, 1 for your own cake 2 to friends/family and 1 to keep for you next cake just follow the instructions to grow again.. I might make it again for the family for Easter..

Gosh , I remember making Herman the German a few years ago . It certainly kept me baking as no-one was interested in taking my friendship starter yeasty beasty ! But it was a good cake - I fiddled about with the recipe each time - more apple , different sugar toppings , sometime it was more of a pudding cake and we had it hot with cream . I remember I took one into work but most of my colleagues rejected it when they heard how the yeast process grew and grew- but to me that was the fun of it ! I'll have to make a Herman again ! Damn , I'm on my diet !

I had a go with that mixture years ago but it becomes a bit of a bind. You can't go on handing the mixture around or your friends and neighbours will hide when they see you coming.. grin

Too much cake to eat as well. You can start to feel guilty if you throw the starter away, particularly if you give it a name and make it seem like a family pet.
Nice cake though.

Im about to make one but it says to divide the mixture into 4, one for your cake and 3 to give friends. What do the friends do with the starter, do they add to it like I will have done for 10 days or do they treat it differently. My mix would be started from scratch but if I give someone a bit will it not be different if they add the same amount of stuff as I did. would it be stronger?
