Help! I have to make party/finger food for vegans. Any ideas anyone? Apart from carrots sticks and humous I have no idea!

LucyGransnet (GNHQ) Mon 05-Sept-16 15:59:51

Most welcome!

And yes, durhamjen the dim sum look lovely - might have to make them my next cooking attempt...

cazzajen Mon 05-Sept-16 15:37:07

they look delish! Thanks Lucy!

durhamjen Mon 05-Sept-16 15:30:39

I do not like Jamie Oliver, but I looked at his recipes from your link, Lucy, and I think the dim sum would be perfect, particularly as one of the comment was that they can be frozen, then steamed from frozen.

Also, I can't remember who said life's too short to stuff a mushroom, but they are the perfect finger food when stuffed with a nut roast mixture.

Lots of omni recipes can also be 'veganised' just by swapping in vegan butter/cheese/milk (you can find Violife cheese in Sainsbury's now, or Holland & Barrett if there's one near you, and there are plenty of dairy-free milks and butters about). The PETA website has lots of good recipes as well. As a fellow vegan, I'm sure they'll really appreciate you going to so much trouble for them - I know I'm always quite touched when someone does it for me. Good luck!

Oh, and if you're doing pud too, Jamie Oliver has some great vegan recipes www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/category/special-diets/vegan/.

It's a family party and my son and his girlfriend have just turned vegan after being vegetarian for years.

Yes I saw it jen I had problems trying to acess it from here it is a good site. When catering for a couple of hundred or less I use little plastic markers to specify if something has gluten, dairy, eggs etc in it. I sort of hope the vegetarians know what meat looks like grin.
I have some good helpers well mainly DD and a friend really as I cannot stand for any length of time.
I really enjoy doing vegan/vegetarian menus as I feel it stretches my repertoire.

durhamjen Sun 04-Sept-16 11:35:40

I did actually give a link to www.viva.org.uk which has masses of vegan recipes on it of all kinds.
Often you find if you give individual recipes, there are all sorts of reasons for that one not being possible, for example, having allergies.
The fourth post was an attack on vegans.

Cazzajen, why were you chosen to make the vegan finger food?
It just seems strange if you do not know anything about it.

felice Sun 04-Sept-16 11:31:15

What happened to the vegan tables , I give up

felice Sun 04-Sept-16 11:29:46

a couple of photos

You can also make little pastry cases to contain things, use the equivalent of veg or rape seed oil instead of butter, it will not be as short as using butter but if you add some dried herbs/garlic/curry/five spice or other dried seasonings to the mix it makes tasty little containers.

I know they morph away but when an OP asks a specific question is it so difficult for people just to awnser it without starting a debate. If a discussion on veganism is prompted by a post place it under Chat perhaps and debate there, then people posting replies to the actual question will not get lost in the mix.

cazzajen Sun 04-Sept-16 10:54:46

These are brilliant ideas, so appreciated, thanks!

Wobblybits Sun 04-Sept-16 10:54:30

Felice, most threads morph away from the OP subject.

felice Sun 04-Sept-16 10:54:22

Sorry meant one of the only ones, DGS is helping me this morning !!!!!

Farmers only keep animals for economic reasons. If we were all Vegan, the only animals would either be in the wild or pets. Even animals kept for other than eating, would still be slaughtered when uneconomic. Best that we all follow our own agenda, accept each others choice and eat what we wish. There are a few things I refuse to eat on ethical grounds, but I respect others choice to do as they wish (providing it does not include cruelty, endangered species etc)

felice Sun 04-Sept-16 10:53:06

I seem to have got this thread wrong, or am I the only one who read that the OP was asking for recipe ideas ???????

durhamjen Sun 04-Sept-16 10:39:06

Are you saying, phoenix, that there is no need for any animals that we do not eat?
The Chillingham white herd would not be here if cattle were just for eating.
Both sheep and cattle help the environment by eating grass.
We just do not need all the ones that are only bred for eating, and that consume more energy than they provide, while increasing greenhouse gas emissions.

Just had a look, I also did little baby potatoes, cut in half, some roasted in olive oil with a sprinkling of garlic powder and some just cut in half and boiled.
Pickled radishes and carrots, finely slice the radishes and place in a colander over a bowl, sprinkle with salt and leave for an hour to drain, rinse and place in a bowl, make the pickling liquid, cider vinegar, soy sauce, golden syrup or sugar, black pepper, bring to the boil then allow to cool
Pour over the radishes and steep for about 1 hour, drain over the colander, these will keep in the fridge for about a week. Similar for the carrots, make long strips using a veg peeler, do not salt just pour the pickling liquid over the carrots in a bowl when it is hot, leave to cool and drain.
You can add any spices you want to the liquid.

I catered for a vegan/vegetarian and all allergies and intolerances known to man Wedding 2 years ago, I will hunt through my folders for the recipes I used.
I did things like swapping Golden Syrup for honey, I wizzed together, peppers, red onion, chilli, paprika, and cooked red lentils and formed the mix into little sausages and fried in rape seed oil. You have to squeeze the mix in a fine cloth to get rid on any excess liquid then chill before forming.
You can use lots of veg/pulses this way.
I also did dips using white beans with different flavours, tomato, curry, and five spice.

Samosas, bhajis, felafal, etc. (easier bought than made!)

Mushroom crolines - a bit like a mini sausage-roll with a creamy mushroom filling.

Mini halved pittas with various fillings e.g. hummous, tapenade, salsa, fried tofu.

phoenix Sun 04-Sept-16 01:43:21

Just like to add that I used to keep a small (50) flock of sheep.

phoenix Sun 04-Sept-16 01:18:18

Just thinking that if the whole world went vegan then there would be no need for cattle.

durhamjen Sat 03-Sept-16 23:22:26

There are lots of animals in the world that people do not feel it necessary to eat.
I haven't heard that saying about there being no sheep, pigs, cows if we didn't eat them for years. I thought people had realised that you don't need to eat animals to like them.

If it has a face, don't eat it.
Save animals with Viva!
No pigs on my plate.
Live life, don't kill it.
Cows have BFFs too.
All on Viva teeshirts.

Lots of delicious vegan recipes.

Oh dear, that link's full of stuff that's not even vegetarian, let alone vegan. As long as you know the difference, you'll be able to sort the 'good' stuff out. Sorry I can't help, I'm not a great one for cooking smile
