I've just made mince meat cake as I had made too much for this year. It's a basic recipe from the Liverpool echo in the 1970s . The cake not the recipe. I made two lots and it's very alcoholic . It seems to mature well in the fridge.

I am a mincemeat lover And have always got to have a jar in to make mums mincemeat cake

I make my own mincemeat. It is incredibly easy to do. DGD is allergic to almonds and hazelnuts, but loves all the traditional dried fruit based Christmas food. By making everything myself,we know that there is no danger of her accidentally eating almonds, hidden in a cake or mince pie.

Shouldn't be a problem taking it into Italy. I only ever got stopped coming back from Italy with some jars of my friend's pesto in my hand luggage. I explained to the security guard that it was fatto in casa (home made) and he very sensibly realised that I couldn't possibly be expected to leave it behind grin

Our Sainsbury's only stock it at Christmas. I use it for doing baked apples so stock up while it's there.

I tried to buy mincemeat in the summer and was told it was a seasonal item. When I said I'd always baked mincemeat slices all year round they looked at me as if I was a confused old lady! I asked in Sainsburys, Asda and Tesco

Will look again but couldn't see Amy in our Tesco or Sainsburys.

Not necessarily, mincemeat can be used all year round, as grandMattie proves.

But for those thinking ahead, I did by DD a stocking present yesterday - although she may get it for her birthday (in May).

Is this the first mention of Christmas 2017? shock

No doubt some have already wrapped presents!

I can get jars from the big supermarkets and the Co-op at any time of the year. the family is fixated on my "mince pie crumble tart" confused.
I don't think there are any restrictions if the jar is still sealed.

chelseababy Thu 09-Feb-17 12:27:36

No not making it just looking for jars of ready made such as find near Christmas. I think sealed jars are ok to take but will check.

Teetime Thu 09-Feb-17 09:39:52

Are you intending to make it as you can readily get all the ingredients in any supermarket. I am just wondering though are you allowed to take foodstuffs into another country?

We are visiting friends who now live in Italy and asked if there was an thing they would like us to take. They've asked for Shetland mincemeat. Found the suet but no luck so far with mincemeat. Any ideas?
