I've not tried this recipe. It looks as if it's quite a lot of flour for the quantity of yeast so perhaps it would be rather heavy. I usually make the grape cake from the same book. It works very well if you use blueberries instead of the grapes.

I've just ordered a JO comfort food cook book. Reduced from £30 to £8 which I didn't think bad.

Oh dear that's a shame- you could let the Jamie people know via the website. I have a James Martin desserts book which has some fantastic things in but his Lemon Merengue pie came out very peculiar I think the cornflour amount was a misprint. I think if you as a cook feel instinctively there is something wrong with a recipe its best to go with your knowledge as I should have done in this case.

Had friends/relatives staying last night so we got out Jamie's Italy (Jamie Oliver). DH made a successful chicken cacciatore and I made a cake for dessert, called something like Sara's Torte. It looked good, but felt very heavy and when cut into the middle was just stodge. So disappointed. I think we'll stick with Mary in future for cakes and desserts!
