M&S cheese flavoured hot cross buns. Wierd or wonderful?

In the '60 I remember DM making hcb on Good Friday, a real treat, all the more for being available only at Easter.
My mistake this year was buying two large expensive Earl Grey hcb from an 'artisan baker' boring and chewy with no discernible taste of anything, needed a liberal application of marmalade!

On the subject of hot cross buns, I made a "Hot cross bun and butter pudding" yesterday with a packet of mini HCBs which I found in the freezer.
Good result - will do again

In the days before supermarkets, the bakers only did them on Good Friday. The only shop in our high st that was open on that day apart from the fishmonger. We always had smoked haddock, bright yellow.

Yep, leave them alone! The traditional ones are the best! In Tesco yesterday they were selling 2 packs of 4 for £1.....traditional and also chocolate and orange (I think) so bought one of each ......and threw away choc ones! I've always thought that traditionally they are only eaten on Good Friday but these days anything goes anytime! I've been eating Creme eggs ever since they appeared in the shops!

I've become slightly obsessed with Lidl luxury HCB - they're so full of fruit and really spicy (even with no sense of taste I can tell). Not sure about cheese buns but a piece of cheese with them would be good. We went into the supermarket cafe today - there were some HUGE cheese scones which looked lovely - too big for one so we split one between us. What a disappointment - they were sweet dough mix with cheese on the top. Why do they do that - cheese scones should be savoury

I seem to be very much in the minority ........ but I loved the cheese hot cross buns from M&S!!!! . I love cheese full-stop!

Marmite flavoured chocolate is quite subtle and not bad. I bought my GCs some Marmite sticks of rock as stocking fillers at Christmas, they enjoyed them! I notice they no longer make their chocolate bars.
I have finished my pack of 4 cheese HXBs. Had one filled with cheese, one with bacon and another with a poached egg (not all at once!). I still tasted the onion for hours! Worth a try but never again.

Hot cross buns seem to be available year round in my local supermarket.

I well remember as a child having them only ever on Good Friday, for breakfast, and they were a real treat since we never had anything similar all year and my mother never bought cakes or biscuits anyway.

Cheese ones sound pretty grim. Quite apart from anything else, supposedly cheesy things from shops never taste nearly cheesy enough for me. I've had a National Trust cheese scone, and Waitrose cheese straws, both of which I imagine were only shown a morsel of cheese at a distance.

In short, hot cross buns mark the end of the christian LENT period (several fasting days to be observed and giving up something for the Lent period and giving the money to the poor). LENT starts on the day after Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day). The cross on the bun signifies the crucifixtion of Jesus on the cross. Hot Cross buns were not available until Good Friday in my day, and were freshly baked at any local bakery, even in London where I am from. They actually cost one old penny each, hence the rhyme "Hot Cross Buns, Hot Cross Buns, One a penny, two a penny, Hot Cross Buns". Good Friday at 3pm, is when Jesus was crucified on the cross. Christians will attend the solemn ceremony of the crucifixtion at churches around the world. All this came about in the 4th Century.
Unfortunately, commercialism takes over as usual and Hot Cross Buns are available just after Christmas! Whether people believe in the Christian faith or not, its always good to know why these things exist.

I had sticky toffee HC buns last night from Morrisons they were very tasty and i will go and get somemore today, you can never have too many HC buns in my opinion i just love them.
As for the cheese flavoued ones,sounds a bit like the Marmite flavoured Easter Eggs in Morrisons that i saw in their Easter aisle, Yuck!!!!!!

Waitrose Apple and Cinnamon hot cross buns are a sad disappointment too. If I hadn't seen the description on the packaging, I'd never have known.

My hot cross buns mixture is proving in the airing cupboard at the moment. I haven't made HCB for over 30 years. I am quite proud of myself!!!

They were already in the supermarkets in February when we were in Australia, and as DH loves them (can't stand them myself!) I went to pick up a pack and realised there was something odd about them - no crosses on them! I asked the girl at the bakery section and she said 'Oh yes we ran out of piping bags so couldn't do the crosses today'! Just 'buns' then?!

Cheese hot cross buns are like theft in multi storey car parks, wrong on so many levels!

My husband likes the Waitrose Cherry and Almond buns-a bit like a Bakewell tart.

Oooh don't ! I LOVE HC buns (or cold happy buns as we used to call them !) ...none for sale here !

Tried making some once, but they were, shall we say, better forgotten ...even the birds wouldn't eat them !¬ Not sure I would fancy cheese flavoured ones though !

lujaha I like them all now but when I was a child I disliked all of them.

I quite liked the orange and cranberry ones last year but DH didn't. It's a pity you can't buy one to try!

Elrel dont bother with the orange and cranberry ones they were a disappointment.
