Just did the stupidest thing!

Made a steak pie with a lovely suet crust top, trouble was I finally realised, after puzzling about the strange appearance that I'd used plain flour grin.
Now I've removed the flat piece of uncooked pastry and replaced it with the properly made suet crust. OH is wondering why he's having to wait ?

I always use plain flour for pastry even with suet. hmm

DM used to use half and half, SR and plain.

I think I used to use plain for making dumplings in the dim and distant past when I didn't need to watch my weight.

I always use S/R for suet crust , I'm wondering how you could make it with plain as it was flat hard and not brown. I'm going to have to look to see how I should of done it.
Merlotgran could you kindly tell me how you do yours?

I always use SR too, but my suet crust is always for steamed steak and kidney pud.

Sorry tanith - brain not in gear tonight. I add a tspn of baking powder to the flour. blush

Ah that would make all the difference Merlotgran thanks. Of course because I thought I was using S/R that's why I ended up with a pancake ?.
It turned out great the second time.

I am not good with pastry but if a particular method or recipe works for you don't change it.
