Came across this last night (with bread) in a restaurant serving 'modern European' food.
It tasted horrible to me, almost rancid.
Has anyone else come across it?

I quite like it when listening to The Proms.

I have never come across cultures butter and had to Google it. This is what it said: Cultured Butter is butter made from cream that is cultured with active bacteria (similar to yogurt) and has a distinctive, slightly tangy taste. It can be used interchangeably with regular butter in cooking where the tangy taste will complement the recipe.
I don't think you'll ever find it on my menu.

Sorry Witzend, did it complement your meal?

A bit late coming back to this, but it was just served with bread as a side dish (ordered and paid for, not just the usual bread and butter thrown in.)
Nobody else seemed to dislike it, but then I'm not keen on milky/creamy/yoghurty things anyway.

OldMeg, yes, must say I was wondering whether it was processed e.g. with Radio 3 in the background!

Is the stuff that tastes like a sharp cream cheese? I had some recently on a trip to the Åland islands and it was lovely.
