Out of date marmite

I don't use a lot of Marmite so mine is often out of date. This doesn't worry me at all. They have to put some date on it but it's probably something arbitrary like a year, whereas in fact all that salt will keep it practically sterile for much longer.
I would be a bit more wary with Bovril as it contains animal products, but it's still very salty.

The Bovril i’ve been enjoying on toast for the last couple of weeks says July 2017. (I didn’t look at the date until yesterday) it tastes just as good and i’m Still here.

Love Marmite so it's never old. I could live on Marmite on a slice. I love it on toast but discovered wheat isn't good for me. I eat sourdough and that doesn't toast to well.

I've very recently thrown away a jar of Marmite dated 2016. It tasted fine but the jar was almost empty so I've bought a new squeezy one.

I have been eating six months out of date Marmite on my morning toast for the past couple of weeks. I am still perfectly normal. I can't imagine Marmite goes off for years. Let him eat it.

I d definitely eat it but then I rarely take any notice of dates I go by smell, looks and taste not dates I often eat things out of date and they are fine I ve never even thought about dates on marmite, or bovril yummy yum

I love Marmite, even though I know it's very salty so probably not all that healthy.
I believe it contains several B vitamins.
I would never throw it away .

My mother has loads of stuff which is well past its sell-by date. Most of it I throw out, but Marmite, having so much salt, I didn't. However, it was 10 years out of date and had gone a bit hard. I put it in the microwave to soften it and used it for gravy. We are both still here to tell the tale.

Marmite never really goes off, the salt content is too high. It is just that the law says thinks have to have a Best by date, so Marmite put one on and will not accept responsibility if, very occasionally the flavour goes off.

But poisoning you? I have done a google search and cannot find any reference to anyone every being poisoned by eating marmite, in date or out.

I have eaten Marmite that is well past its sell date without any ill effects

I had an out of date jar of marmite partly eaten. It actually DID taste off

I saw a comedian saying he had won a years supply of Marmite.
One jar.

In all honesty I would give it a try.

If it looks wrong, tastes wrong then chuck it.

When DH retired and took over the cooking he took over the food shop too (the two sort of go together and I hate shopping). He was enthusiastic for bargains and bog offs and we had cupboards full of packets and jars struggling to be eaten by their use by dates. I think there may have been possibly four large jars of Marmite and I’m the only one who eats it. I think it’s like Lea and Perrins. They have to put a sell by date on the jar but in fact it goes on forever!

Anyway, ‘Best before’ is different from ‘Use by’. I would think twice if the date was a ‘Use by’.

I would eat it and not worry about the date. It isn't likely to go off.

Just throw it out when he's not there then he can't eat it. It's not an expensive item to lose is it?
