Reading that some people want to ban The Pogues Fairytale of New York because it contains the word Faggot I got to thinking that weren't Faggots some sort of meatball.
From the North of England I think, never had them as my Dad seemingly hated them.
I did a quick poll of my gay friends and none of them are remotely offended.
A step to far ?????

Very clever quizqueen! I think you covered all bases there! We are becoming a very easily offended society.

etheltbags1 Sat 15-Dec-18 21:56:58

I was unaware that the word faggot had a sexual meaning. I too got called a little faggot and also we ate them. However i cant stand the song in question as it sounds like a load of drunks with slurred words and having lived next to a pub for years that song got on my nerves so yes ban it

All the Christmas songs are a bit rubbish.....the Pretenders one and Joana Louis and Slade. Oh and Chris thingy.

I'm pretty sure the 'faggot' used in the song does not mean a gay man anyway - in the terms of the song at least, its a heterosexual woman shouting it at a heterosexual man. Ergo it must be the "bad behaviour" meaning of the word. I'm getting a bit fed up of people getting offended on other people's behalf - its both silly and patronising!

Theoddbird Sat 15-Dec-18 20:52:26

How bloody ridiculous. That has been a Christmas song for so long. I always thought faggot referred to a miserable old lady....

adaunas Sat 15-Dec-18 19:45:14

Meatballs every time. If I wanted to be offended it would be by the insults they are exchanging in a song that has a title that might appeal to children. But then I have the option, listen or don’t listen. Even in public places you don’t have to LISTEN to the lyrics- just let them slide past you.

It Snowed Last Night..
8:00 am: To celebrate I made a snowman.
8:10 - A feminist passed by and asked me why I didn't make a snow woman.
8:15 - So, I made a snow woman.
8:17 - My feminist neighbour complained about the snow woman's voluptuous chest saying it objectified snow women everywhere.
8:20 - The gay couple living nearby threw a hissy fit and moaned it could have been two snow men instead.
8:22 - The transgender man..women...person asked why I didn't just make one snow person with detachable parts.
8:25 - The vegans at the end of the lane complained about the carrot nose, as veggies are food and not to decorate snow figures with.
8:28 - I was being called a racist because the snow couple is white.
8:31 - The middle eastern gent across the road demanded the snow woman be covered up .
8:40 - The Police arrived saying someone had been offended.
8:42 - The feminist neighbour complained again that the broomstick of the snow woman needed to be removed because it depicted women in a domestic role.
8:43 - The council equality officer arrived and threatened me with eviction.
8:45 - TV news crew from BBC showed up. I was asked if I know the difference between snowmen and snowwomen? I replied "snowballs" and am now called a sexist.
9:00 - I was on the News as a suspected terrorist, racist, homophobe sensibility offender, bent on stirring up trouble during difficult weather.
9:10 - I was asked if I have any accomplices. My children were taken by social services.
9:29 - Far left protesters offended by everything marched down the street demanding for me to be arrested.

Moral:
There is no moral to this story. It is what we have become all because of snowflakes.

That’s my favourite Christmas son and yes my mum made faggots for us when we were young and we loved them and so did my dad.
Really don’t find the word a problem.

Willow10 - "There was also mention of calling gingerbread men gingerbread people on the news this morning!"

Well strangely enough, I have been doing some baking with my granddaughter this afternoon, using recipes from my BeRo book that my mother in law gave me and which was published in 1980. One of the recipes is for Gingerbread People. So not a new phenomenon

I am continually amazed as to what is permissible and what isnt these days, I read an article from a comedian who said things have changed so much in the last 10 years, SO many things are considered these days and yet, the programmed Celebrity juice is allowed to get away with anything and dont get me started on Jimmy Carr, my daughter finds them funny and thinks that i am narrow minded

Linbrikat Sat 15-Dec-18 17:13:42

When I was young, using the word 'queer' to refer to a homosexual person was considered very rude and unpleasant. Now young gay people are actually proud to describe themselves as queer.

1974cookie Sat 15-Dec-18 17:09:08

I always thought it was " Maggot " not Faggot.

Lioness68 Sat 15-Dec-18 16:40:06

I personally hate this song. However I totally agree with the comments. The world has gone far too PC.

I am a Black Country gal and love faggots with mushy peas.

MissAdventure Sat 15-Dec-18 16:23:12

She had a beautiful voice. sad

Craftycat Sat 15-Dec-18 16:21:32

My favourite Christmas song.
I always thought it meant something like Bum or Tramp.
Never found it offensive. Just for the way she sings 'well so could anyone' it deserves to be played every Christmas.

hulahoop Sat 15-Dec-18 15:49:05

Some people must spend their life looks ng for things that might offend they need to get a life this political correctness is just getting stupid now if I don't like a songs lyrics I don't listen to it likewise comediennes, programs etc .

Jinty44 Sat 15-Dec-18 15:32:42

I can see why some people might feel the phrase 'you cheap lousy faggot' is offensive.

But somehow, these same people are never offended by what it is responding to. He has just called her 'an old slut on junk'. Is that not equally offensive?

I wonder if Ronan Keating changed those words too, Edithb?

lovebeigecardigans1955 Sat 15-Dec-18 15:23:44

I hate this song but banning it so going too far, some people are easily offended by the slightest thing.

Edithb Sat 15-Dec-18 14:43:51

There was an old documentary about the song last night and it seems that when Ronan Keating sang it on TV the lyrics were “you’re cheap and you’re haggard.”

kitnsimon Sat 15-Dec-18 14:40:16

My dad used to bring some home occasionally, we called them ‘savoury ducks’ . They were delicious !

EllanVannin Sat 15-Dec-18 14:26:28

I have his CD Gill. The words to his song would indeed be taken out of context today. At the time it meant nothing other than an innocent friendship.

Are we going to make anything of the TV docu. about 4 year olds visiting the elderly ? Of course not----but give it time for the twisted brain brigade to awaken their autosuggesting.

mabon1 Sat 15-Dec-18 14:24:40

Political correctness gone crazy. I love faggots my family used to make them on the farm after the pig had been slaughtered, really yummy. The shop bought aren't a patch on the family ones and we know what is in them, no preservatives E's etc.

GillT57 Sat 15-Dec-18 14:16:04

The worst song I think is that one in the late 70s by Gilbert O'Sullivan called 'Claire'. As the lyrics unfold about the girl who loves him it turns out she is just 8 years old!! Post Saville these kind of songs, however innocent, just are not looked at the same.

GillT57 Sat 15-Dec-18 14:02:54

Your comment about 'women's lib, tree huggers, veggies was a little harsh Ellanvannin although I feel your irritation. Not sure I have a problem with people who have protested about female emancipation, gay rights, animal rights, anti-fur, without them we would be living in a very different world. These kind of stories always crop up, just a load of mischief making to my mind.
