But why appropriate words which had different meanings years ago - why not invent new words?

Such rubbish, it is a wonderful song and just an inebriated couple slinging insults at each other, nothing to do with homosexuality at all.
However the one that really insults me is Wives and Lovers (see Jack Jones on You tube) the lyrics are so insulting to women "Hey little girl comb your hair, fix your makeup soon he will enter the door....etc etc. He was incredibly good looking but watching this post on You tube and listening to the sentiment, I could easily put my fist through my lap top!

I have a vision of a generation that can't go to concerts or comedy gigs because the bands aren't allowed to sing any of their songs with 'inappropriate' words in and the comics can't tell any of their jokes.
And just to put the cream on top no-one is allowed to applaud or whistle after their non-performances because that upsets people too!

World's gone mad.

My mother used to make faggots. She used the ‘pluck’ of an animal al minced together with salt pepper and a packet of sage and onion stuffing. She’d then make the mix into balls and wrap them in caul before cooking them in the oven.

It's 30 years since the song was released (31 when it was written). I have a gay friend who wears a t shirt with cheap lousy faggot on the front and he loves the song. I was told that the word faggot is used in Ireland for a lazy person so perhaps this is what Kirsty Mccoll meant as she was accusing him of spoiling her life in the song. I for one will still be singing it and playing it whilst at work along with all the other songs I've grown up enjoying regardless of any connotations other seem to read into the lyrics. Our heritage in music and literature as well as nursery rhymes etc is slowly being eroded to a point where we are becoming scared to say/do anything that might upset a minority/other culture. I do not advocate being rude, abusive or demeaning to anyone but I do wish that those that keep being offended on behalf of others would just .... off!

Apologies if anyone has already said but 1988 is 30 years ago, not 20. Kirsty McColl died 18 years ago, in December. I remembered hearing that she died after being struck by a power boat, whilst pushing her son out of the way, in an area where boats were not allowed. As a memorial to her and her bravery this song should never be banned.

The use of the terms "snowflake" or "PC gone mad" is a way of justifying or dismissing unkindness or thoughtlessness. There have always been people who are more easily upset by situations or others reactions. You only have to look on all the DIL /MIL threads to see that.
The concern over the word "faggot", as a derogatory term for homosexuals, which is presumably what is being sung in the song & not referring to a bundle of sticks or a meat product is not pleasant. However if the call to ban is not from Stonewall or similar organisation we should continue to enjoy this most unChristmassy of Christmas songs!

Just carry on as we were ladies----------ignore the minority who are all out to spoil things for others.

Remember Larry Grayson ? He made people laugh as well as laughing at himself instead of making " his way " a serious issue. I used to love his shows.

Oh! I'd forgotten. I went to a concert last week by a choir of older people. They sang a mixture of WW1 songs and Christmas stuff. They did, "Pack up your troubles" but they'd taken out the line about lighting your fag World's gone mad.

I've heard Baby its Cold Outside more often than ever in the shops this week, so maybe there is a backlash against this rubbish. There was also mention of calling gingerbread men gingerbread people on the news this morning! Has the world gone mad?
