What are your 3 ‘go to’ family suppers?

I made dinner last night and got to thinking of my usual favourite suppers that I make on a fairly regular basis. Nothing fancy (as for a special occasion) just ordinary dinners.

Mine are:

1. Chilli & rice
2. Hungarian goulash a la Delia
3. a pork, apple, sage & onion dish topped with cheesy mash and served with green cabbage.

What are yours?

How do you do/buy crispy tofu, experts please advise? Not keen on frying.

MissAdventure Sat 26-Jan-19 09:43:06

I haven't enjoyed tofu each time I've tried it, but crispy night be the way to go.

Lazigirl Sat 26-Jan-19 09:41:16

I would love to try tofu but haven't the foggiest notion how/what to buy or cook it confused.

MissAdventure Sat 26-Jan-19 09:27:05

I don't have any 'go to' recipes, because I'm not a fan of cooking, but I did make a sausage 'thing' after reading this thread, and the pork recipe sounds good (and easy!) too. smile

crystal, can you share your recipes please?

Annana Sat 26-Jan-19 06:42:00

And I used to think that what with a beef stew (with prunes and red wine) , a couple of times wild boar, and then a quiche with varied fillings , that I was really special! Seeing what others make, am humbled but impressed.
Would love some recipes

emma49 what a great idea to do a screen shot! Salmon parcels, new potatoes and salad, cottage pie, Sunday roast

Macaroni cheese. Meatballs and pasta
Cheese pie -throwback to childhood. No pastry-layers of potato, carrots and onions with grated cheese (Leicester is best ,but any strong flavoured cheese is ok) lots of black pepper and milk to almost cover the veg. Cook 200 degrees about 45-50mins. Think it was originally a wartime recipe my Mum made. Always a favourite with me. Made it tonight.

CatMum59 Fri 25-Jan-19 19:43:57

Beef casserole (in the slow-cooker)
chilli con carne
shepherd's pie

CazB Fri 25-Jan-19 16:53:24

Triple fish pie (Mary Berry)
Spaghetti Carbonarra (I add onion and mushrooms)
Egg Curry (adding whatever veg I have to the sauce)

Emma49 Fri 25-Jan-19 15:29:45

Lazigirl ,haha perhaps I shall put some pork in with the port.

Urmstongran Fri 25-Jan-19 14:31:34

Lazigirl ??

Lazigirl Fri 25-Jan-19 14:17:22

Oh Emma you have so disappointed me. Trawled the thread looking for Urmstongran's port recipe (I have bottles taking up space in the cupboard) but guess you mean pork! Still looks a great recipe and I love this thread for meal ideas. I don't care what meals are called by the way Urmston. It was tongue in cheek. grin.

Emma49 Fri 25-Jan-19 13:08:42

Hi Urmstongran, I have just taken a screen shot of your port recipe as it sounds delicious, I will hopefully make it tomorrow. Lots of great ideas on this thread.

Am I aspirational working class? Maybe. Who cares?
So many of us use a different moniker for a cooked meal ‘of the day’. You’re right Lazigirl and Floradora9 - maybe I should have just said ‘main meals of the day’.

Cottage Pie Chicken Chausser Roast Dinner

I love the Mary Berry lasagne too, but for greater speed and tastiness, I use Tesco's Toulouse sausages and fresh pasta sheets.

M0nica Fri 25-Jan-19 09:57:26

We have our main meal at lunch time and a light meal at supper time (or tea time, if it is bread, spread and cakes).

Spaghetti Bolognaise
Risotto (no one recipe in particular)
Home made curry, (no one recipe in particular)

Lazigirl Fri 25-Jan-19 09:50:02

"Supper" Flora is what the aspirational working class refer to when they mean "tea" or evening meal. grin Perhaps it's David Cameron's fault for popularising "kitchen suppers".

Floradora9 Fri 25-Jan-19 09:33:11

Interesting to see what people call their evening meal . Supper in what we Scots would have before going to bed . Dinner is mid-day and tea is at well ,tea time .

Jennylynn Fri 25-Jan-19 07:47:51

Chicken Caesar salad
Toad in the hole
Spaghetti bolognaise

BradfordLass72 Fri 25-Jan-19 04:24:55

Now I'm hungry!

I had carrot soup for my supper (I still call it tea).
Saute peeled and chopped carrots in butter, add stock (I used vegetable) just enough to cover the carrots comfortably if you like your soup thick.
Blend when cooked.
If I do this as a starter for guests I'll have cream and croutons available (my grandson like the Bagel Bites).

Our lazy meal when needed is fish fingers oven chips and H baked beans. love it.

Shizam your lentil dahl sounds lovely and healthy too. Could I leave out the chillies?

Well as I have M.E. and stomach not great husband usually does dinner/supper. and we have to watch what we eat. So its pretty simple. Small amount of carbs plus 3 veg plus protein- salmon fresh tuna chicken turkey steak ( husband) . Once a week we have a bad evening- usually pizza garlic bread etc. Very boring . When I can I like to do risotto, beef/ red wine casserole, veg lasagne.
