What sort of thing are you buying Gill?

There was an article in a paper last weekend about how manufacturers are reducing sizes/weight of items but maintaining prices! So we don't think prices are rising!

Is it just me or are loo rolls smaller than they used to be ie fewer sheets?

which arrived last week... I also have a 6 weekly regular order I place withTesco for cleaning / toiletries / tinned/dried goods will be ok for a while! If the message comes to stock up I will just push the button a couple of times!

I can make do with a tin of tuna and some home-made passata (plus pasta) but I cannot make do without toilet rolls.

I certainly am not a victim of project fear ( which I prefer to call project reality) I am not being selfish or panic buying. I am gradually stocking up with non perishable goods.

No I won’t be adding to panic buying merlotgran if it happens I will buy what there is, if there’s no eggs then I won’t eat eggs if there’s no flour I won’t eat bread However much you stock up it’s only going to be enough for a month or two and if this all happens we ll be xxxxxx for years so we may as well get used to it

You don't have to be a Remainer to realise that leaving any kind of stocking up until the last minute is irresponsible.

If you believe there will be shortages then you should be gradually adding to your normal stock of dried goods now. This will not hurt your pocket, nothing will go to waste, the supermarkets won't run out and you'll be saving yourself a lot of stress.

If you believe it's all nonsense then you will be adding to the panic buying chaos - if it happens.

If nothing happens the supermarkets will be an oasis of calm in April.

Everyone has a choice. Not all Leavers are smug and complacent and leaving everything to chance.

It is interesting that the chiefly remainer mumsnetters are taking sensible precautions and enduring they have sufficient dried and canned food, nappies etc while the majority of gtsnsnettets (with a few exceptions) are all linking arms, singing uplifting songs and talking wistfully about wartime rationing. Ok a wild exaggeration, but even the government are stockpiling ffs. My additional purchases over the next few weeks will not cause shortages and will save me from witnessing the carnage when the smug and complacent go shopping and find the shelves not quite as well stocked as usual. That is when the panic buying will begin and I do not wish to be anywhere near it.

I had not even thought of it. However, if nearer the time we are forewarned of shortages then I will make sure we have enough basics to last for a little while.

Stockpiling? Of course I am! I have a nice little stockpile of about 2 stones of fat and am looking forward to using it all up in the next 6 months or so!

The main reason the Millenium Bug was, to all intents and purposes, a non-event was because a lot of people had spent a lot of time over several years making sure that it wouldn't affect us to any large extent. I don't have the same confidence in the efficiency or knowledge of anyone in government with regards to the effect of Brexit on imports

Consequently, I've ordered extra supplies of things like pasta, rice, tomato based products, spices, any long-lasting items that come from abroad. OK, if everything goes smoothly I'm still going to use them, and all perishables such as vegetables, fruit, meat, etc I can adapt to what's available so I don't see the point in buying extra of those.

I never thought I would be in a situation where I would actually consider buying to avert shortages, but I have absolutely no confidence in the ability of this government to know what the hell it is doing.

My main reason for keeping my store cupboard stocks up is because if there is panic buying at the end of March, the last place I want to be is fighting my way through the shelf strippers in a supermarket.

We always have enough to see us through a period of bad weather so I'll just make sure we don't have a 'use up' just yet.

Yes but his concern was he was storing these extras because his usual foods may not be available. Felt for the farmer who was obviously v concerned for his & his family's livelihood.

Well interesting discussions on Food Programme on R4. Major importers v concerned about fresh produce availability from a no deal Europe. Also impact on jobs involved. V interesting! Not panic, just people who can see what the impact might be. Anger that March 29 is so close without any clarity!

Reading your post cornergran I am going to speak to the surgery tomorrow morning and see if there is a way round it. We cannot be without medication, and that's that, and if it means having extra on a prescription, so be it. I will see what they say.

Concern about medication here also. Mr C's apparently 'may' be OK, the pharmacist isn't sure and can't guarantee. Surgery won't issue more than 28 days at a time now although its long term, vital medication so getting to be a worry. Food-wise we'll take our chances I think, no room for great stocks here and a very small freezer, we 'wonder' about it rather than 'worry'.

I have enough food in the freezer to get me through months and months! What I am slightly concerned about is medication, I did speak to the pharmacist who reassured me but I really don't know.

Like Niobe my surgery will not issue prescriptions before the due date and only 28 days of tablets. At one time I could get 3 months at a time but that changed last year.

My doctor tells me that if I can lose a little more of this stockpile then I probably won't need my Metformin so win-win really.
However on a more serious note none of my medication is absolutely vital but my husband has a heart condition but can only get 4 weeks worth of medicines at a time . If you ask for a prescription ahead of time they delay sending it until you are due to run out. Even if due to go on holiday you need to jump through hoops to get the prescription a little early.

Wasn't there some media panic about the 'Milennium Bug' in 2000 that was going to bring world to its knees? Don't recall any issues actually arising!
