The Government has created a new Minister for Food David Rutley MP to Defra to try and manage the shortages that will happen after we leave the EU.
We import so much from the EU & even if we find deals later we will have a few months of delays at channels ports as everything will have be checked as it comes through. At present they are just passed if they are from the EU
Same with pharmaceuticals, if we Leave it is bound to cause shortages as many are made in the EU. Even if we manage a deal they will still take longer to reach us.
Lots will change after we Leave, food will be the biggest impact on us as our farmers are going to lose their subsides and many are talking of giving up, they will be working for nothing. Somehow we need to ensure we are prepared because the Government in particular Theresa May has refused to allow preparations in good time.
We are expected to stock up with enough tins, dried foods, tea, coffee, water, etc for a few months, baby milk, foods, anything that is imported. Many businesses are failing in this country & will not be able to continue after leaving in March. They have appealed to the Govt but it falls on deaf ears so the public will be taking the full force of the government incompetent preparations.
The Govt expects problems and is getting the Military ready, at least a thousand in Northern Ireland and the rest throughout the UK. They must be expecting riots because of food & medicine shortages. Goodness knows what will happen to those already in severe poverty, those who do not have spare cash to buy ahead & the very elderly. The planning does mean hospitals will get food first.
This apparently is what the Government says we voted for. Our supermarkets will be closing without eough stock to make it worth while for them
I've converted a small room into an extra pantry and buying extras every week for the last months to add to this emergency supply. We did it during the Cold War but finally didn't need it then but we are facing something of our own making now and it makes sense to prepare.
Pretending it will not happen will not make it go away. If a miracle stops it then I hope I can donate it to food banks. But common sense says that if we leave the EU our food and medical supplies will be severely interrupted for at least some weeks.
