All ways liked to make my own jams, jellys, marmalade. Last year DH had to help more then normal ,having to have extra help made it more of a chore. He has come to me today saying he would like to get me one of these his reasoning is good . Makes small amounts, don't have to stand for long time . What do you think.

I got one, they are messy and it is still touch and go with the standard of the jam made. All it does is the actual cooking you still have all the ret of the work to do.

I have had good results with mine (a Tefal one from Lakeland some years ago). I didn't find it any more messy than making jam the ordinary way. When you have finished the pan is sticky - but a jam pan always is! You pour in some water and set it for the cleaning routine, then use a washing-up brush to remove any stickiness that remains, pour off that messy water and rinse it. The non-stick surface means it cleans easily, and I have never had to clean burnt-on jam from mine. The cleanng takes 12 minutes, which is about long enough to wash up the preparation utensils and so on.

You still have to do all the preparing of the fruit and the jars yourself, but you set the timer to suit the kind of jam you are making, so you don't have to keep testing it, as the time is usually right. If you make a jam that is not on their list, you have to use your own judgment and time it like a kind that is.

Making smaller amounts is either good or bad, depending on how much jam you get through. When I had three children/teenagers at home, I would make 10 pounds at a time in my oldfashioned aluminium jelly-pan, but when there was just me and DH, 4 or 5 pounds at a time was plenty.

Maybe you can rope in DH for the preliminary peeling and chopping. That always seems to me to be more work than the actual jam.

Going to have another go with mine. Mine was also from Lakeland and I bought it a few years ago. If I remember it also makes chutney. How can I belong to the WI and not be able to to make jam.

The chutney still fills the house with the delicate(?) aroma of vinegar, but it stirs it constantly, so it doesn't stick.

I love my jam maker, got it a few years ago from Lakeland.

I got it when it was on special offer. I felt guilty initially at the cost, , but it has been worth it's weight in gold and so easy to clean.

I absolutely love it!
I used to make lots of jam in a huge jelly pan, inherited from my mother. However, it became to heavy and cumbersome for me, due to my RA and I gave up making jam for a while.

I read about the jam maker and my DH, knowing how I enjoyed making jam, encouraged me to buy it.
Throw everything in and leave it, that's all there is to it.
It also has a jelly setting, which is useful.
I always add a little pectin to help it set. If you can't be bothered cutting up fruit, Mamade tins of pre-prepared fruit work well. The marmalade is very tasty.

I raided my sister in law's garden last week and made rhubarb and ginger jam. All it cost was the sugar, (and power) as I always recycle and sterilise my jam jars.
DH demolished the rhubarb jam in no time!

The only downside, you have to wait for the jam maker to cool down, before making the next batch.

Do you have a slow cooker, I can give you recipes if you need. You still have to prepare fruit, and the pot gets sticky, buts that’s jam !. I’ve had reasonable results, tend to use my old preserving pan because I make large quantities, but for a small batch the slow cooker is ok.

Marydoll can I ask, have you made chutney using your Ball jam maker? I was thinking of tomato chutney in particular.

Marydoll Tue 27-Aug-19 22:15:52

Sorry, no.
However, you have put that idea into my head.

I think there maybe recipes in my book .
I know that there is a chilli jam recipe.
Bear with me, I will have a look tomorrow and see what I can find.

I shattered after a day of childminding!?

Now I posted links last night and they have disappeared. I hope they are not on the politics thread or somewhere obscure.
Here goes again!
This link will take you to the home page for chutneys made in a ball jam maker.

I used to make jam in my soup maker with the children in my nurture unit. We then had it for breakfast (part of the nurture room routine) later in the week. The children loved this activity.

The smell of jam used to pervade the whole school! The first time we made it, my colleagues couldn't understand where the smell of jam cooking was coming on. grin

A week ago, I bought a new slow cooker, just a miracle.
I have three grandchildren and it’s very difficult to get everyone to school and kindergarten in the morning. It is necessary to collect clothes, iron, and have time to cook breakfast. And now beauty, fell asleep for cereals, milk, salt, sugar and went to do business. While the children washed and dressed, porridge was ready.
I was very pleased with the function of delayed inclusion. I fell asleep everything I needed in the morning, arrived from work in the evening, and you are waiting for a delicious hot dinner. You can also bake a delicious pie in it. During cooking, you can open the lid to try or report the ingredients.
But the most important thing is that it’s very easy to work even for my husband, if I left, then he definitely won’t stay hungry. He does not know how to cook, but throwing pieces of chicken and spices is not difficult for him. Even a child can handle it. I ordered kitchen appliances here.
