New (at least to me) combination foods

A few years ago I discovered (and thought I had invented) Coconut Cocoa.
That's the old bedtime favourite but with coconut milk or cream powder mixed in, rather than cow's milk.

For those in UK, Tesco sell sachets of cc powder and Maggi do it too, in case you feel like trying it. It's a lovely winter drink, especially with a splash of booze.

But this week I discovered another unusual combination.

At first I thought, 'Oh, no, yuk.' But I was at a friend's house and didn't want to appear rude so tried it - and it was delicious.
Not something I would ever have thought of doing for myself. But now I shall.

It was a bowl of winter salad (raw cabbage, red and white, grated carrot, beetroot, slivered Lebanese cucumber, finely chopped Spring onions) with a little dressing - and potato crisps crumbled on top!

Maybe it's a staple everywhere and I've been living in the dark but I've never come across it before. It really was delicious.

I sometimes make a grated carrot and beetroot mix, add a little oil and crushed garlic (it's best left in the fridge for a day to 'settle') and have that with cottage or other cheese - now I'm going to see if a bit of crumbled crisps goes with that too. I may try Green Onion flavour smile

What unusual food combos have you invented or come across?

My DH loves Marmite and Beetroot sandwiches and swears he invented them........unless anyone here knows differently.

Yes, Cheese & Jam was a favourite for years, and I regularly eat fruit bread with cheese, too!. My husbnd's pet hate - and my current sandwich favourite, is Crunchy Peanut Butter & Banana, topped with Sultana's!

Goats cheese and sliced strawberries on a cracker or similar, had it in Spain for the first time and it was delicious.

My brother used to eat peanut butter, lunch meat, and cheese sandwiches. Seriously. He would put all three together on ONE sandwich. (The combination is odd. The use of peanut butter, alone, or with banana, jam/jelly, or honey on a sandwich is not unusual in North America.)

Also cheese and jam on brown bread.

Smashed Avocado Peach Slices (chopped) and coconut yoghurt. You will never have a dairy yoghurt again.

BradfordLass - your salad sounded lovely until you ruined it with crisps. I hate crisps. I am not a very fussy eater but crisps and marmite are amongst the very few things I don't like.
The raspberry jam and cheese sandwich is something I used to eat - the rest of the family said I was very strange so I'm glad that others eat it.

I have, as a sandwich filling, tuna, salad cream (or mayo) with thinly sliced or chopped apple.

Isabelle, our school cook used to make a pudding with stewed apple topped with a cornflake and syrup
mixture, baked then served with custard. It was yummy, wish I had the recipe.

I like bacon and banana pancakes, drizzled with maple or date syrup.

avocado and marmite on toast, delicious

A South African favourite is a bacon and banana sandwich, it's actually delish!
Also, a 'Bunny Chow' which is a quartered loaf of bread with the inside scooped out and filled with curry, (mutton, lamb, chicken or veg), the scooped out bread is then put on top to help soak up the gravy!

Cheese scone filled with philly cheese and topped with cranberry jelly.
It’s the savoury version of a scone, clotted cream and jam.
It’s really delish.

I love cream cheese and lemon curd sandwiches, chocolate and beetroot cake along with bacon and banana. My husband loves Marmite on toast with lashings of pepper which I think is disgusting.

Cheese & fruit cake or any type of fruit bread. It was common where I was born, but when I moved 30yrs ago, people here thought it really strange. My daughters boyfriends had never heard of it, but will now not eat fruit cake without a slice of cheese.

DGs current favourite down here is toast with butter, ketchup and HP sauce.. Not sure myself but do like HP on toast.

Oh yum yes MJ1971, marmite & peanut butter - one of my favourites! DS used to have peanut butter, mashed banana topped with cinnamon sugar on toast. Beetroot and cheddar cheese sandwiches are good too. Bought and tried cheese and marmalade sandwiches in Sainsburys once, nice but haven't repeated it. A niece used to have chocolate spread and lime marmalade sandwiches and say they were wonderful!

Nanny27 I love sandwiches with peanut butter, banana and cottage cheese - double yum!

Daddima Wed 16-Oct-19 12:21:24

fennel, my father always liked to add beetroot to a beef stew, it was always delicious.
My aunt made us banana sandwiches with Cadbury’s Flake.

Funnygran Wed 16-Oct-19 12:12:06

My late sister used to make a Marmite cake which was delicious. As far as I can remember it was a plain sponge with melted butter and Marmite drizzled over the top. I tried to make it once and it was a disaster so I threw the recipe away. I obviously lacked her touch.

netty toasted fruit bread with cheese. I often make that. Plus marmite
Another idea, if you make a beef stew add some soft apricots during the last hour or so.

Mcauliffe27 Wed 16-Oct-19 11:42:12

When our children were small my husband made them cheese and jam toasted sandwiches they loved them but their children won’t touch them.

I was introduced to the following when visiting a tea shop in Leyburn many years ago.

Buttered fruit scone, then a slice of cheese topped with strawberry jam - mmmmm, nice - I sometimes do the same combo on a baguette at lunchtime (without the scone of course!).

Isabelle Wed 16-Oct-19 11:33:52

Cornflakes with custard. A great pudding if you have nothing in a fancy something sweet.

Youngatheart51 Wed 16-Oct-19 11:29:20

Nanny27 that's one of my faves, had it for tea last night. My husband likes peanut butter on toast then squirts tomato ketchup onto it ?
