Please can you tell me if Tesco delivery men, friendly and helpful as they always are, bring the goceries into the house and unload as part of the job, or are they doing me a favour when they do so?

EllanVannin Fri 29-Nov-19 12:26:57

Just be grateful if they do help you, I'd say.
I was offered help by the taxi lady who brought me home from Asda the other day, but declined her kind offer because as I'm still fit and able to do it myself but there could come a time when I'm not able.

I think it's part of their job Alexa. They always offer to take the shopping into the kitchen and then ask if I'm OK to unload it, so I assume that if I said 'No' then they'd help me.

Contact Tesco to clarify ?

growstuff Fri 29-Nov-19 13:20:00

I always state that I don't want carrier bags, so they bring the trays in and help me unload on to the kitchen table.

FlexibleFriend Fri 29-Nov-19 13:43:25

It's up to you but I always take my goods at the door to avoid the dogs getting out. It's part of the service if you want it.

Neither Tesco or Sainbury's deliver in plastic bags now.
I find they are happy to unload onto work tops, after all now without bags they can't just leave it in the boxes.

I am not fit to carry the Tesco crates into the house, or to unload them at the door. My kitchen table is easy to access from the door. The delivery men have always been extremely helpful and thoughtful. I think I might try to contact Tesco,Nico.

Thanks all.

Interesting this. I shop mostly at Aldi financially it helps me but I would consider Tesco if the service is this good.

SueDonim Fri 29-Nov-19 20:59:28

Yes, Tesco unload here. Though I don't use a delivery service often any more, as we don't really need to.

Alexa Fri 29-Nov-19 21:12:47

I have just rung Tesco. It's "up to the driver's discretion" whether or not they bring the stuff into the house and help to unload it.This answer to my query makes me feel I am not actually paying for having the stuff brought in.

In that case, I'd like to give the driver quite decent tip. I once offered a tip and it was refused.I suppose they are not allowed to accept tips.

They always bring in the trays and help me unpack them - I must just look pathetic I guess!!

FlexibleFriend Fri 29-Nov-19 22:20:19

This is what their website says

Our experienced drivers use vans designed to keep your groceries at a temperature that’s similar to how they would be in-store. Where possible, the driver will try to bring the shopping to your door or even to your kitchen. However, please understand that we take the health and safety of our drivers seriously, so this won’t be possible if they will be at risk of injury; for example, where delivery to your door or kitchen would mean going up a few flights of stairs. Also, we can only deliver if someone over the age of 18 is there to sign for your delivery.

Giving your shopping delivery driver a tip? Whatever for?
It is their job, you have paid for it either by means of a delivery charge or contained within a monthly fee or similar.
Whatever next! Crisps and sandwiches?

MawB Fri 29-Nov-19 23:04:17

May I recommend Ocado - they bring the shopping into the kitchen, give you 5p for every plastic bag you return and price match with Tesco.

Alexa Sat 30-Nov-19 12:59:48

Fexible Friend, that is helpful.Thank you. I did not see that when I visited the Tesco website.

Charleygirl5 Sat 30-Nov-19 13:16:01

I shop online with Morrisons and the fellows always bring my goodies in and pop the bags on the kitchen floor. I used to accept everything at my front door but after the last surgery, lifting and using crutches did not mix.

I have also discovered that the am fellow's last deliveries are 1-2 pm for that day. I frequently receive early deliveries ie 12.45 pm. Without fail they have all been pleasant and helpful. I am lucky, there is easy parking and easy access.

Alexa Sat 30-Nov-19 13:23:10

Maw, the driver might need to go to the bathroom. Why not? They are human too. On a hot day when they are overworked they might need a drink of water or juice.

My Sainsbury's delivery men are very good, and bring the shopping into the kitchen and help to unpack. Have also used Ocado and Waitrose, and they do the same. Also, if Waitrose are late they will give you a bottle of wine!

Deedaa Sat 07-Dec-19 21:15:48

Alexa DS is a Tesco delivery driver. He tells me they aren't supposed to accept tips (DD tells me she always tips the Sainsbury driver) DS says his main complaint is customers who keep him on the doorstep in the pouring rain and then complain because their shopping has got wet!

Alexa Mon 09-Dec-19 10:00:48

Deedaa, I believe delivery drivers all work hard. I don't know about grocery delivery drivers but Amazon delivery drivers' bad working conditions and pay have become a public scandal.

ananimous Mon 09-Dec-19 10:07:15

Tesco advert on Gransnet? Why didn't the OP just ask Tesco that question? Rubbish Tesco service - they sent me old fruit and vegetables and the jars were filthy. - Happy with Asda now.

Alexa Mon 09-Dec-19 10:19:52

Ananimous, I did ring Tesco but the advice was inconclusive. "It's at the driver's "discretion."

I have two Tesco drivers in the family and can confirm It’s not part of a Tesco delivery drivers job to take shopping in the crates into your kitchen, although they are more than happy to help anybody if asked and they will offer help especially if they can see a customer is struggling. It’s not unreasonable to expect a normal customer to empty the crate at the front door whilst the driver gets the next crate, no bags? I sure you got some reusable bags in the house, or can enlist other family members to help. unfortunately there just isn’t enough time during the time slot to do this for everyone. Some customers will not allow the driver over the doorstep, even when raining, if driver turns up 5 mins before the allotted time slot they keep him waiting in his van till the correct time, (fair enough he is early and he can get penalised for this, but if customer is sitting on settee refusing to answer door till the allotted time, this could be classed as unreasonable) they then expect delivery to kitchen with no help to unload even though there could be several fit adults in the home, others expect the delivery into the kitchen past the front door and up steps in the dark, which can be extremely dangerous. These drivers work hard, they are short staffed, it’s a pity some people look down on the service industry, I would like to know what job MawB does to have this attitude

Grannyflower Tue 10-Dec-19 22:43:56

What a kind thought Alexa to want to tip your Tesco delivery driver. I like to be able to tip good service, in whatever industry too. Yes they are doing a job so what harm does a Thank You do? It’s always nicer to be nice ?
