Digging deep into my cupboard I found a jar of pasta sauce. Only problem is that the date on it is 2017. Bin or not?

If the button in the middle of the lid is still depressed I think it is fine.

Nah! Do the button test, then smell and taste. If all OK, go ahead...

I recently made jellied beetroot with jelly which was best before May 2018. It was fine.
If your sauce looks okay, smells okay and tastes okay, then go ahead and use it.

It will probably contain a lot of sugar, this acts as a preservative.
Either way I’ve never tasted a nice processed pasta sauce so you may never know if it was off or not.

Ditto, Missfood, they are all far too sweet for me.
If I make a tomato based pasta sauce the most sugar i would add, depending in the quality of the tomatoes, would be a pinch.

Has it got meat in it? If so be more careful.
If only tomatoes etc probably ok after a good boil.

I’d check the lid, smell it, taste a little and if it seemed ok then use it. Thinking about it I rarely look at the date on tins or jars, maybe I should. hmm.

I would use it!

Thank, no meat in it. I will proceed with caution!
