Butter - why does it taste so bad?

President is the only butter for me. I can’t find an English butter that compares

Have a go at making your own - it's easy to do. Just keep whipping double cream until it separates, add a touch of salt to taste. When satisfied that the lumps have turned to butter remove from the residue milk and pack into a suitable container. Can use the buttermilk in other recipes such as soda bread - which is delicious both with or without butter smile

If you can bear to buy butter that's not English, then I can recommend Elle et Vire, Président or Beurre d'Isigny. I'd always buy unsalted/doux because of the taste. As a small child I was brought up on Welsh butter (which is similar to Breton so I could buy it here in France now) but as an adult I've grown accustomed to and love the creaminess of unsalted butter.

Yes, the blocks are better than the spreadable, but I still like the spreadable.

I love President butter, however I try to buy British.
Lidl do a beautiful British butter with sea salt crystals in a black wrapper.

Shirgar, a Welsh butter is quite good but block not spreadable version in a tub. It is probably better to buy butter produced as locally as you can as it always seems to be creamier when it is as fresh as possible.

There is an amazing difference between the leading brand butters that are sold in tubs compared with the old fashioned block butter. The tub kind have additives to help them easier to spread, yet both will be branded with similar packaging for Lurpak, Country Life, or Anchor et al.

We used to buy Sainsbury’s Cornish farmhouse butter, but since they no longer deliver to us due to lockdown, and have treated us very shabbily despite being elderly vulnerable customers for many years, we will be taking our business elsewhere in the future. My elderly Step mother would only eat St.Helens farm Goats butter, but it’s quite expensive and rather an acquired taste, although l do like fresh Goat’s milk.

I was going to suggest finding a farm with it's own dairy. We have a local farm selling cheese, butter and cream. We cant go at present though, as that would be a non essential journey. ?

Our butcher sells butter from a local farm. It’s a bit pricey but worth it.

I’d look for locally produced butter. Small farms round me sell their own butter and cheese so maybe look in your area for small producers or farm shops etc.

I don't buy spreads as I think they are so full of additives and oils . but I do like (and buy) butter. However, when I was a child I remember butter being very tasty. I like to buy British and support our dairy farmers but I cannot find a British butter that's really creamy and tasty. In France, the butter is delicious so I have been buying French butter - a little bit more expensive but worth the pennies although still not as delicious as the butter in France. Can anyone please recommend a really creamy, tasty nice butter?.
