Snacking

Apparently, people are snacking a lot during lockdown.

It's not something we have ever done - think how wide I'd be if we did - so we don't have snacky stuff in. We have fruit on the kitchen table, crisps which are occasionally (though rarely) eaten at lunch time and some chocolate as a sweet treat sometimes in the evening.

Do you snack and, if you do, what do you snack on?

Oh dear my list is endless
Crisps
Sausage rolls
Pita bread and dips
Bananas
Jaffa cakes
Scotch eggs
Toast
Popcorn
Pringle’s
I wished you hadn’t asked. This is lockdown snacking, I’ve got it under control now. Luckily I’m still a size 12.

My downfall is cheese, and marmite rice cakes. If I buy biscuits or crisps I can't leave them alone, so I don't buy them.
Sometimes I go hunting through the cupboards for something - anything- that resembles a snack and find myself eating cubes of jelly or spoonsful of peanut butter.
Just lately I have been trying mug cakes and mug meals, just one serving of each of a suitable size - no leftovers. These I treat as a meal, not a smack in an effort to control my portions. They are fun to do and yummy to eat.

‘Luckily’!! I have an ulcer.... so since diagnosis I eat smaller meals ...4 times a day. My day starts at 6am though... and was told strictly nothing after 6.30 pm as it causes reflux, which in turn has wrecked my oesophagus, and burnt hole in stomach (ulcer)....so I stick to my doctors advice 90% of time. When I dont I suffer....I’ve lost 1 stone in weight ... and learnt snacking is a no-no and overeating is gluttony. The only ‘sin’ i avoid assiduously! My ulcer may kill me one day , but for now it’s actually keeping me healthier!

At beginning of lockdown I bought a very large bag of salted toffees on eBay. Absolutely delicious! We suck them to avoid fillings coming out and a trip to the dentist who wouldn't see us anyway. We are now on the last few sweets of the 2nd lot!
We ration them to 1 or 3 sweets each per evening. Sure a little of what you fancy does you good!

Biscuits that I make, the favourites have ginger and cinnamon in them, so I kid myself they are good for us! Mainly done because my DH needs to put on weight!! Srangely enough the weight is going on me!!

I love nuts and crisps but had to stop snacking and only do it on Wednesdays now post weigh -in (Weightwatcher) . I keep grapes and slices of banana in the freezer to snack on. Fruit is 'free' of points. I keep plain biscuits too. Shortcake ones, ginger, malted. And I eat sugarfree sweets.

My son buys me pretzel pieces from Sainbury's American section. I love the Snyders of Hanover honey and mustard ones. I must stop soon as I am now a lard bucket.

Scissordolly Sat 20-Jun-20 11:07:39

My son has lost a stone since he has been working from home. He says at work people are continually making tea and coffee and asking if anyone would like one. He says it's hard to say no when it's being made for you and set on your desk!

Milk and milkshake my big downfall

TrendyNannie6 Sat 20-Jun-20 10:39:31

Well I’m a real sinner, and like MissAdventure my life is one long snack , but I’m happy

Callistemon Sat 20-Jun-20 10:37:13

DH is snacking but I'm trying not to apart from fruit.
Even so, guess who is the one who has put weight on.

My neighbour said she is regularly baking cakes and they are eating cake every day. They are both as slender as reeds.

Theoddbird Sat 20-Jun-20 10:22:51

I don't buy biscuits or chocolate...I don't have a sweet tooth. I do like a thin rice cake with caramelized onion humous on for a snack in the evening or even in the day.

Kim19 Sat 20-Jun-20 10:22:09

I pretty much only snack. Seldom cook a meal. Think my snacks are comparatively healthy but recently have taken a fancy to just 'having a 'nibble' when something catches my eye in the larder. (I only went in for the honey jar!). I'm so irritated by this that I'm now ceasing to stock the treats/extras. They were initially bought in in case of visitors. Bubblers are currently bringing their own picnic so no need for these purchases whatsoever. Pathetic that I have so little self control but I once lost a lot of weight and I'm not prepared to put it on again. Comforting to read that others here have similar weaknesses and some of your snacks sound really interesting.

Cheese and biscuits with a glass of wine, or G&T. Lockdown s miserable enough without denying yourself a treat.

Mollygo Sat 20-Jun-20 10:21:32

If snacks are between meals, we don’t really do it -chocolate, cakes and biscuits, or fruit are for dessert, but I’ve noticed that the cupboard is full of ‘just in case‘ Border dark chocolate gingers-the supermarket had them on offer £1 per box for a whole month!! Mmm?

I’m delighted that peaches and nectarines are now in season, my favourite fruit. I started off being very good at the beginning of lock down but have gradually become less careful. I’m sure I’m now carrying some coronakilos but I haven’t yet plucked up the courage to get on the scales.

I have blueberries instead of sweets and in the summer I eat a lot of chopped up melon.
I am quite partial to the odd bar of Turkish Delight.

Oh dear - I've battled with my weight for years, on and off sad.

Boredom / snacking is such a balance struggle for me. I take fairly strong painkillers - plus I'm on high-dose Iron Tablets - so there's a tendency towards 'constipation' for me .......................... hence the piled high fruit bowl on my coffee table.

I'm fully aware of the high amounts of fructose in the fruit, but at least there's no fat in it - and the extra fibre does me a power of good wink. I try to limit the number of bananas that I eat, but will happily dip into satsumas, plums, pears, apples, apricots, nectarines/peaches, grapes at various times of day, as it keeps me away from the biscuit and cake tins grin.

Cashews nuts are my downfall
And seriously why do they have resealable packs?
Once open I will want to eat the lot

....and I have been known to eat a hot buttered crumpet with a spoonful of syrup on it.

That is my treat breakfast!! I'm sorry you mentioned it now!

Missfoodlove Sat 20-Jun-20 09:04:54

Cheese is my “go to” snack.
I have to wrap it numerous times in foil and bags to stop myself hacking big chunks and eating it on homemade bread. ?

I buy Palestinian dates from an Amazon site and these are my 'sweet treats'. I am not safe near chocolate which I haven't seen during the lockdown period, so the dates have been my indulgence - and apples.

Strange isn’t it, I’m not safe around Palestinian dates ( or any dates, let’s be honest.) I would eat the whole pack, same thing with nuts.
Sliced apple, bananas, digestive biscuits ( non choccy) and thin buttered fruitbread ( Warburtons for choice) are my snack favourites.

PinkCakes Fri 19-Jun-20 21:33:36

I do tend to snack on things when I 'm bored or feeling unhappy. It's usually chocolate or biscuits. I'll be glad when the leisure centres open up again so I can do my exercise classes.

kittylester Fri 19-Jun-20 21:29:31

Bluebelle, did you read the rest of my post. Surely, snacking, is eating between meals!
